Ruth McConkie Nelson
Ruth McConkie Nelson died March 11, 2005, in Ferron, of causes incident to age. She was born Nov. 26, 1919 in Moab, the fourth of six children to William Russell McConkie and Nora Johnson McConkie.
Ruth was raised in Moab where she graduated from Grand County High School and later from Brigham Young University. As a long-time educator, she taught home economics, physical education, English and special education. She taught in LeVan, Utah, at Central High School in Castle Dale, at South Emery Junior High and Ferron Elementary in Ferron. Even near her death she remembered the names of all her former students.
Ruth married James Rulon Nelson on May 23, 1945 in the Salt Lake Temple. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in many different callings. She loved music and sang in the ward choir for many years. She had a great sense of humor and infectious laugh. As an avid reader, she loved books of all kinds but especially literature, and history of all kinds. To her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren she was lovingly known as “Ice Cream Grandma.”
She is survived by her sister Norma (Jon) Kerby, Poway, Calif.; daughter-in-law Barbara H. Nelson, Salt Lake City; children Monte (Jan) Nelson, West Valley; Sylvia (Gerald) Haycock, Sandy; Beth (Leon) Bogedahl, Torrey; James R. (Lynda) Nelson, Ferron; Anne (Michael) Thompson, Richland, Wash.; Mark (Ruth) Nelson, Ferron; and Keith (Amy) Nelson, Castle Dale. She was preceded in death by her husband J. Rulon Nelson, sons Conrad Rulon Nelson and Clyde McConkie Nelson, her parents, and siblings: Wayne McConkie, Faun Tanner, Lois Parrish, and infant brother Clyde McConkie.
Funeral services will be held Sat. March 19 at 11 a.m. in the Millsite Ward, 35 West 200 North in Ferron.
Viewing will be held from 7-9 p.m. Fri. March 18, 2005 at the Fausett Mortuary, 710 North Center, Castle Dale, and one hour prior to services at the chapel in Ferron.
Nicholas Kole Davis
Dec. 31, 2004-March 12, 2005
HELPER-Our precious little redheaded “Buggie,” son, brother, was called home to be with his angel on March 12, 2005. He was born on Dec. 31, 2004 in Price to Mike Davis and Sara Powell. Although his time on Earth was brief, he will forever be with us. Our precious baby was blessed on Feb. 6, 2005 in the LDS Church.
Our handsome baby is survived by his parents, Mike Davis and Sara Powell; big brother MaCade Davis, Helper; grandparents, Todd and Karen Davis, Carbonville; Kenneth and Joyce Powell, Price; great-grandparents Jack Birch, Price; Nana Beth Davis, Price; Richard and Arline Powell, Wellington; and Alberta Christensen, Wellington. Also survived by many loving aunts and uncles and his special cousins Todd, Taycie, Shontae, and Skyler, who will love him always and forever.
Preceded in death by grandparents LaPreal Birch, Bruce Davis, Neva Davis, James and Wilba Fowlas, and Grant Christensen. Also preceded in death by cousins, aunts, uncles and his special Uncle Nicholas Kosmo Gallegos.
There was a viewing Mon. March 14, 2005 from 6-8 p.m. at Mitchell’s Funeral Home. The funeral services will be Tues. March 15, 2005 at 1 p.m. with a viewing one hour prior. Interment Cliffview Cemetery following the services.
Dan Lee Huntsman
CASTLE DALE-Dan Lee Huntsman, 64, passed away March 11, 2005 in Orem. He was born Oct. 7, 1940 in Castle Dale, to Leland J. and Ruth A. Huntsman. He was the oldest of five children.
Dan grew up in Castle Dale and graduated from South Emery High. He married his childhood sweetheart, Karen Kofford on June 27, 1958. Solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple, June 21, 1964.
He worked for Monroe Calculator Inc. for 16 years. Then worked for Savage Brothers Industries for 29 years. He was president of the Cedar City Jaycees. He served in the LDS church as a secretary in the Elders Quorum and as Stake Clerk in Castle Dale for 9 years.
He loved his family, 4-wheeling, camping, computers, Christmas lights in Salt Lake, family reunions, and swinging on the porch. He had a great appreciation and love for the outdoors.
Dan leaves behind his wife of 47 years Karen; mother, Ruth; children: Clyde (Kimberly Jo), Laren (Lanell), all of Castle Dale; Kimberly (Doug) Snow, Providence; Darrell (Lisa), Mason, Ohio; 14 grandchildren, and nieces, nephews. Also survived by brothers and sisters, Ramona Kaehl, Ronald, Irene Fossat and Calvin. Preceded in death by his father Leland.
Services were held Mon. March 14, at 11 a.m. at the Castle Dale LDS Stake Center where a viewing was held prior. Burial in the Castle Dale Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Norman O. Johnson
Mr. Norman O. Johnson, Jr., age 77, of Castle Dale died Feb. 26, 2005, at Utah Valley Medical Center from complications of heart disease.
Norm was born on Dec. 11, 1927 in Long Beach, Calif., to the late Norman and Genevieve Johnson.
After high school, Norm joined the United States Army, serving as a personnel technician, while continuing his education in engineering and mathematics. His career spanned many decades as a draftsman until his retirement to Castle Dale in 1990.
Norm was active in the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Lodge #791 in Long Beach, Calif., serving as President. Norm was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Lodge #2743.
Norm is survived by his wife of 33 years, Nancy of Castle Dale; brother William of Long Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Heidi Brockman of Idyllwild, Calif. and Debbie Sue Morgan of Scappoose, Ore.; two step-children, Joel Dorsch of Castle Dale, and Danelle McEvoy of Alameda, Calif.; and seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Lanny Brett Kirkwood
PAONIA, COLO./SPRING GLEN-Lanny Brett Kirkwood, age 41, passed away peacefully at his home after a courageous battle with cancer on March 11, 2005. Lanny was born Jan. 25, 1964 in Price to Lanny K. and Lavina Koss Kirkwood. Married Jodi Kulow May 3, 1986, later divorced.
Lanny loved motocross racing and Nascar. He was an avid fisher and hunter, and loved to golf. Lanny had a very great love for his family and many dear friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Survived by his wife, DaNeen Kirkwood, Helper; sons, Joshua Jensen, Price; Jordon Maughan, Helper, father, Lanny K. Kirkwood, Price; mother, Lavina, Helper; sisters, Kathy (Louie) Santi, Price; Kristine Kirkwood, Grand Junction, Colo.; JoDee K. Jackson, Price; one grandson, Jadeyn Jensen.
Memorial service will be held Wed. March 16, 2005 at 1 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s one hour prior to service.
Dellas Movell Atwood
Beloved husband and father, Dellas Movell Atwood, 84, passed away March 6, 2005 at Cottonwood Hospital. He was born on Feb. 20, 1921 in Elmo to Soren Edward Atwood and Rachel Pearl Cramer. He served in World War II in the Pacific, discharged as a staff sergeant, 322nd Infantry Regiment H. He served in the Northwestern States Mission for the LDS Church 1948-1950. He attended B.Y.U. for three years and was a brick mason for more than 45 years. He was an active member and served in various church callings throughout his life. He had a strong testimony of the gospel.
He married Carmen Mary Nelson on June 21, 1986 in Ogden and they were sealed June 19, 1987 in the Salt Lake Temple. He loved gardening and sharing his produce. He taught his sons to work in the garden. He loved to read scriptures and discussed them with anyone. He was very patriotic and honored his country and was a member of the Olympus Male Chorus for many years. He played the harmonica, banjo, saxophone, piano and organ and enjoyed listening to others play music. He was a good father and will be dearly missed for his positive attitude.
He is survived by his wife, Carmen, and his two sons, Nathaniel Delmen, 17, and Alexander Cardell, 15; and his brothers, Glen, Von, Clark, and many friends. His family would like to thank Hospice of Utah for their kindness and care of Dellas.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thurs. March 10, 2005 at the Ridgedale Ward, 3400 South 100 East, Salt Lake City. Friends may call at the ward chapel Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to services.
Gary H. Mathie, Jr.
HUNTINGTON-Gerald H. Mathie, Jr. (Gary), age 58, returned home on March 12, 2005, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Born Dec. 13, 1946 in Salt Lake City to Gerald H. and Henrietta (Hedy) VanCorler Mathie.
Gary served during the Vietnam War in the US Army for which he received numerous medals. He was a general contractor for most of his life, but always returned to farming and raising cattle, which he loved. “You will be greatly missed dad!”
Survived by his mother, Henrietta VanCorler Mathie; children, Natalie (Kenneth) Mathie Zaelit, Torrey (Stacy) Brandon Watts; grandchildren: Kaitlyn Zaelit, Monica Goodge, Gabriel and Alexander Mathie; brother, Michael (Jeanie) Mathie; nieces and nephews, Derrick (Mandy) Stewart, Daniel Blankenship, Sandra (Pat) Carlson; grand nieces, Cassidy and McKinley.
Preceded in death by his father, Gerald H. Mathie, and his sister Deborah Kay Mathie.
Funeral service Thurs., March 17, at 1 p.m., Huntington Third LDS Ward, 190 South Main. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and at the church one hour prior to service. Interment Huntington City Cemetery.
