The population of Green River has just increased by 10 with the addition of the Americorps volunteers from around the country. Based in Sacramento, Calif. The volunteer powered organization sends volunteers worldwide to provide needed services to communities.
The group will be staying in Green River for two and a half months. Christine Monroe has donated the use of her rental house for the students housing during their time in Green River.
The volunteers will be cleaning along the river at Nefertiti and will be rewarded for their effort by a boat trip with Bob Quist. The group will clean along the Green River Main Street. They will pull weeds and paint curbs. They will also be helping senior citizens in the town with sprucing up their homes and doing painting and cleanup projects.
The group will also be helping with the Green River Community Center where they will teach the summer school program on Tuesday-Fridays. They will focus on arts and art related projects during the summer school.
Green River Mayor Glen Dale Johnson said, “We’re happy they are here and hope they have a good stay.”
Emery County Commissioner Gary Kofford also expressed his appeciation at having the group in the county.

Summer school is going strong at the community center. The community center kids and the volunteers have been planting a community garden. They planted tomatos, peppers and squash and onions. The volunteers have pulled the weeds at the Catholic Church. They have weeded Broadway to Main Street and in front of the community center. The day that it rained the volunteers cleaned the inside of the community center. They cleaned the road for the ditch cleaner so it could clean the ditches in the city. One day they worked at the stables grooming the horses.
“Green River is a wonderful place. It is so peaceful and everyone is so appreciative of the work we’ve been doing. Everyone knows everyone and it’s just been a lot of fun,” said the volunteers.
