Emery loses at Union 42-19

The defensive team lines up against Union.

For the first time this season, the Emery Spartans scored on an opponent in the first half. The Spartans scored twice in the first half on sustained drives and once more in the fourth quarter but lost the non-region game at Union High School 42-19.
Union scored first as they intercepted a Dave Justice pass in the first series of the game and returned it for a touchdown. Union then scored on a 5-yard run on their first series of the game to go up 12-0. A short punt aided in the Cougar field position.
After allowing two touchdowns in the first minutes of the ballgame, the Emery defense strengthened and held Union to only one more score in the half.
Emery scored twice in the second quarter as they put together two sustained drives of around 70 yards each. Justice scored both times on 1-yard runs.
In the third quarter, Union was unstoppable as they scored three touchdowns and their defense tackled Emery in the end zone for a safety. Union scored 24 points in the quarter.
Emery did score again in the fourth quarter as Josh Eden had his best statistical game of the season at tailback and scored his first touchdown on a six yard run.
Trevor Thompson had five receptions in the game, Eden had a good game along with Tanner Gardner at tailback. Justice ran for around 80 yards and completed six of 12 passes for around another 80 yards.
On Thursday, the Emery JV team got their first victory of the season as they defeated Union’s JV in Castle Dale 21-12. The JV’s will be at home again this Thursday against Juan Diego’s JV. Game time is 3 p.m.
The Emery varsity team travels to Juan Diego on Friday night for a region game.
