Emery High makes coaching change

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports Writer

Despite improvement as the season went on, head football coach Kevin Reynolds decided at the conclusion of the playoff game at Morgan that now was the time for the Emery High football program to have a change.
After losing the first six games of the season rather convincingly, the Spartans finished the season going 2-2 over the last four weeks. Emery defeated Carbon and Granite handily and gave Region 8 champ North Sanpete and Region 10 champ Morgan all they wanted before eventually losing. Reynolds understood that winning five games over three seasons was probably not enough to keep fans, parents and administration happy.
After the announcement Reynolds commented, “It was a privilege to be associated with these kids, it was especially a pleasure to be around this senior group. They always played hard, did what I asked. I really enjoyed this group.”
When asked about the program he was leaving, he said, “I’ve tried to improve the kids and keep the program going as best I could. The returning group, especially the sophomores, is a solid group.”
Principal Gwen Callahan, who accepted the resignation, had this to say about the coaching staff, “The men who have coached this team for the past three years are some of the best men I have worked with. They are hard working, ethical and have always been a positive example to the players. I appreciate their efforts and time spent on behalf of this football team. They showed great character at all times and were always striving to keep the team positive. I personally want to thank them for their efforts.”
Emery High School has asked former head coach Jimmy Jones to return next season. Jones said, “I am excited to be back. I had three years off that I needed. I’m ready to go again.”
