Spartans Lose at Union 52-44

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports Writer

The Emery Spartans took two different paths to victory last week in boy’s basketball. In a game against the slow down offense of Canyon View in Cedar City, Emery easily won 40-26. On Friday against the fast paced offense of San Juan High, Emery again easily won 76-48 in Blanding.
After losing the first quarter against Canyon View 9-8, Emery held the Falcons scoreless in the second period as they scored seven points and went to the half leading 15-9. Emery then outscored Canyon View in each quarter of the second half to get the win. They won the third period 8-5 and the final period 17-12 as Canyon View sped things up a little.
Darrin Winn led the Emery effort with 14 points. Josh Eden added 12 points including the teams only three pointer. Dave Justice had 8 points, Dempsey Jeffs had 4 points and Vic Rosen finished off the Emery scoring with 2 points. Emery was 16 for 21 at the free throw line.
At Blanding, Emery won the first period 19-8 and the second period 19-10 to take a halftime lead of 38-18. Emery won each of the second half periods also as they won the third quarter 17-14 and the final period 21-16.
Because of the lopsided score, Emery was able to play lots of players in the game as eleven different Spartans scored in the game. Leading the way was Winn with 21 points. Justice added 13 points, Eden added 12 points, Rosen had 6 points and Jeffs had 6 points to round out the scoring for the Emery starters.
Also seeing playing time and scoring were Kyler Edgehouse with 8 points and Jordan Gee with a single point. Scoring two points each were Ryne Jones, Gatlan Huntington, Skyler Jorgenson and Blake Mortenson.
Head Coach Todd Jeffs was pleased after the week, “We are a lot better now than we were before Thanksgiving. Our execution is getting better and the kids are starting to work harder in the practices.”
The Emery sophomores traveled to Duchesne last Saturday and played in a tournament there. They defeated the Altamont JV team 54-21 before losing later in the day to the Altamont varsity 64-50.
Emery is now home this Friday and Saturday hosting the Coal Country Classic. Teams playing this year are Morgan, Canyon View, Snow Canyon, Tooele and Park City along with Emery as the host.
Emery plays Friday night at 8:00 pm against Park City and 7:30 Saturday night against Morgan. The Emery JV plays Friday at 3:00 pm in the old gym and Saturday at 4:30 in the Spartan Center.
