In a team sport such as basketball, it is usually the team that gets the highlights and not an individual player but every so often something special occurs and the player that performs extremely well has to be recognized. Today is one of those times. Last Wednesday night in Castle Dale, the fifth ranked Lady Spartans hosted the third ranked Lady Utes of Uintah High School and ran all over that team and won the ballgame 65-46.
After both teams went scoreless for the first two minutes of the game, Emery went on a 19-0 run to almost put the game away in the opening quarter. Uintah scored the last 5 points of the quarter to trail 19-5. That is what you would see in looking at a box score, now I will fill you in on the rest of the story.
This is the story of a young point guard from Huntington that is known to her friends as Camille Fehlberg. Camille, who seems to be good at whatever she does, had a tremendous first quarter for the Spartans.
Camille scored the first 8 points of the ball game enroute to an outstanding performance for the evening. In that quarter, Camille’s statistic line looks like this- 12 points, 6 steals, 2 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 blocked shot and she caused three other Uintah turnovers. Not a bad start to an excellent night.

Camille added 10 more points in the second quarter along with five more steals to have the start of a pretty decent game. Camille finished the game with 30 points and 16 steals. She also lost one shoe and at the end of the game missed a lay-up because she appeared to be too tired to jump. This attempt came off another steal of course.
When it came to defense in this game, it was not a one-woman show. Alexis Swasey had 7 steals in the game along with 9 points. Ashley Hansen and Meagan Pearson each had 3 steals in the ballgame and Jodi Lundell and Rachel Rasmussen each had a steal. That is a lot of thievery going on as the Spartans turned up the pressure on defense and rattled the Uintah offense.
Head Coach Steve Gordon was impressed with the effort “Although we still need to work on things, we played much better than we did down in St. George. Tonight was a good game to go to the break on. We played good on defense as a team with some great effort tonight by all the girls. On offense, we pushed the ball and made some good decisions off the break.”
Emery was successful in this game because of the great defensive effort. Even though Emery scored 65 points, the offense still needs to improve. Players threw up some horrible looking shots from the outside and often hesitated in shooting. For Emery to enjoy great success this season, players asked to shoot those outside shots will need to shoot and make them. Callie Seeley hit the first 15-foot shot with three minutes left in the first half and Meagan hit the first three late in the final period. Emery possesses some good outside shooters that need to perform as they all can.
Also scoring in the game for Emery were Shala Pitchforth with 6 points, Meagan with 5 points, Rachel with 4 points and Callie and Tahna Merrell with 2 points each. Coming off the bench late in the game were the Emery JV team and Shalae Cox made 1 of 2 free throws and freshman ShiAnne Allred had 4 points in her first varsity action of her career.
