Mike Jones puts the moves on his opponent. |
As the Emery High Wrestling team continues to improve under the tutelage of Coaches Ferd Allred and Yory Allred, the Spartans traveled north to face region foe Juan Diego and came home with a victory as they defeated the host team 48-33.
Out of Juan Diego’s 33 points, eighteen of them came about because the Spartans did not field a wrestler in three different weight classes. Emery forfeited weights 103, 119 and 189.
Emery also was the beneficiary of forfeits as two Spartans also won without facing an opponent. Jex Jensen at 135 pounds and Landon Huntsman at 140 pounds were able to pick up the easy victories.
Wrestling and winning for the Spartans were McKay Allred at 112 pounds, Steven Giles at 130 pounds, Tyler Swenson at 145 pounds, Mike Jones at 152 pounds, Kaden Murdock at 160 pounds and Cyal Christmas at 275 pounds. All winning Emery wrestlers pinned their opponent.
Allred, after surviving a near fall in the first round, was leading by one point in the third round when he pinned his man 30 seconds into the round.
Giles built a first round lead of 4-2 when he pinned his opponent.
Swenson quickly pinned his man in the first round without any points yet being awarded.
Jones toyed with his man as he took him down, let him escape, took him down again, nearly pinned him and then let him escape again. In the second round Jones let him escape, took him down and then pinned him 1:10 into the round.
Murdock, after being taken down, reversed his opponent, allowed him to escape and then took him down and pinned him with 30 seconds to go in the first period.
Christmas built a 4-1 lead before pinning his man in the third round.
Non-winners for Emery were Cade Whittle, who was pinned in the first round, Ty Thomas, who was pinned in the second round and Luke Stoddard, who was decisioned 5-4 and suffered a broken nose in the match.
Emery will host Delta this Wednesday in the Spartan Center. JV starts at about 6 p.m. and varsity starts at about 7 p.m.
