Wrestling is a tough sport. Although you will see an individual go from not so good to really good, you do not often see a whole team go from not so good to really good.
It seems that wrestling is a lot about tradition and in Utah’s 3-A ranks that usually means Wasatch, Uintah and Delta. Wrestlers at these schools are usually in competitive matches before they hit kindergarten.
Delta came to town looking to fine tune their wrestlers for the region meet this Saturday. The region meet will be held at Delta.
Delta did just that as they defeated Emery in the match 67-0.
Emery then traveled to St George for a tournament at Pine View High School. Thirty-two schools participated coming from Utah, Arizona, California and Nevada. Utah schools included Dixie, Pine View, Snow Canyon, Mountain Crest, Pleasant Grove, North Sevier, Payson, and Emery. Wrestlers were individually bracketed in their weight group.
Jex Jensen and Tyler Swenson did particularly well as they lost out just before the medals round. Most other wrestlers did win a match sometime during the tournament as Emery is making strides on putting competitive wrestlers on the mat.
Emery’s traveled last week to Price to wrestle the last time before the region meet. Emery lost a close match to the host Dinos 37-34.
Here are the results of the match. At 103, McKay Allred won by forfeit. At 112, Jaden Bagley pinned his opponent in the second round. At 119, Caleb Worthen was pinned in the first round. Emery forfeited at 125.
At 130, Steve Giles pinned his man in the first round after being taken down and then reversing his opponent. At 135, Jex Jensen got a major decision as he beat his man 12-2. At 140, Craig Guymon lost 14-2.
At 145, Tyler Swenson decisioned his man 9-2 after nearly pinning his opponent in both the first and third rounds. At 152, Cole Bunderson lost by decision. At 160, Kaeden Murdock was pinned in the first round.
At 171, Luke Stoddard decisioned his man 9-6. At 189, Tylor Christmas pinned his opponent in the second round. At 215, Ty Thomas was pinned in the second round. At 275, Cyal Christmas was pinned in the first round.
