Brehm Communications named Richard Shaw as publisher of the Sun Advocate, Emery County Progress and Smart Shopper last week. The announcement came at a corporate manager meeting at the companys headquarters in San Diego, Calif. Last April, Shaw was appointed general manager of the publications when former publisher Ken Larson, relocated to southern California. Larson was named last year as publisher of the Desert Entertainer and Desert Mobile Home News. The two newspapers are owned by Brehm Communications and fill niche markets in Palm Springs, Calif. Larson served as publisher for the newspapers in Castle Valley for more than three years.
Shaw has worked for the Sun Advocate for five and a half years, spending three years as sports editor and reporter, followed by two years as community editor. Growing up in Murray, Shaw graduated from Murray High School before attending the University of Utah where he studied communications. My journalism experience extends from when I was in high school, he said. But I didnt do much with it for a long time after I was out of college. He spent 14 years working at Granite School District, where he was an employee in the facilities department. In the early 1980s, Shaw started writing for trade press magazines. He began to write for a more general audience later in the decade.
During the years, he has written for numerous publications including such periodicals as Entrepreneur, Your Church, Salt Lake City Magazine, Salt Lake City Weekly and The Enterprise. In 1990, Shaw relocated to the Price area and began working at the College of Eastern Utah in the facilities department. He was at the college for four years and then opened his own business, which he ran for six years.
In 2000, he joined the staff of the Sun Advocate.
I feel the Sun Advocate and Emery County Progress are integral parts of the community, said Shaw. He explained that many longtime readers have stopped in the newspapers offices and told him they have received their news from the local newspapers for years, some for many decades.
I want to be publisher of both newspapers for a long time to come, he said. Having been residents of Carbon County for more than 15 years, Shaw said he and his family consider the area to be their home. I dont want to live anywhere else. This is a great place with great people and some great possibilities.
During the corporate meetings he attended in California, Shaw was also selected as the rookie of the year, an award the company gives out periodically, for his work as general manager at the eastern Utah papers during most of 2005.
