Cheryl Grant, daughter of J.J. and Cynthia Grant of Orangeville, played the final season game of her college career on Feb. 27, at Southern Utah University in Cedar City.
Cheryl was a 2002 graduate of Emery High School where she played basketball all three years.
She then played two years for College of Eastern Utah on a full-ride basketball and academic scholarship. She signed with SUU in the spring of 2004 where she continued her college ball play.
Cheryl has served as co-captain for the SUU squad this year and started in all but two of the team’s games this season. At 6’4″ she is the third leading scorer for the T-Birds this year averaging 9.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. She tallied 3 double doubles this season and a career best against Utah Valley with 20 points and 8 rebounds.
On the season she has 47 percent field goal shooting and is 72.5 percent from the free throw line.
The rigors of classroom studies, six days a week ball practice, and the extensive travel during the season with the ball team haven’t deterred Cheryl from maintaining a 3.6 grade point average.
Cheryl has only missed one game during her collegiate career due to a serious ankle injury. In addition, after she was rear-ended by a drunk driver in August 2004 she struggled through pre-season conditioning season play battling whiplash and back injury. Despite that she has had two very successful years at SUU and has enjoyed her college years.
At SUU Cheryl is pursuing a double major in athletic training and physical education. She is considering playing basketball in Europe next year but would also like to complete her athletic training program at SUU. She has one more year in the two-year athletic training program to complete her degree.
