An Emery High player makes a connection with the ball.

The Emery High Lady Spartan softball team had blown through their first five games of the year. They had won those games by an average score of 12-3. Now they were home, it was cold, it was snowing and the field was sloppy and wet. Richfield scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning and it appeared that the streak was over but no need to fret, it wasn’t. Emery scored 10 runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning and won the game 21-19.
Emery scored four runs in the first inning, three more in the second inning and then went scoreless the next two innings. Richfield had added five more runs and led 15-7 after four innings. It was then apparent that the game could be called if the Wildcats got ahead by 10 runs and that everyone could go and get warm.
Emery never got the word. The Spartans scored four runs in the fifth before closing out the game with the big sixth inning. Richfield added three more runs in the seventh inning but it was not enough to prevent Emery getting the win. Malorie Quick got the win in relief of starting pitcher Leslie Lake.
Sophomore Jalee Jensen is the first batter in Emery’s lineup and got two hits and scored four times in the game. She also walked once and got aboard due to an error by Richfield.
Brandee Wilson walked three times and scored three times. Eve Guymon, batting third, scored three times and had three hits including a double and Emery’s only homerun.
Carly Anderson, along with Eve the only seniors on the team, also had a double in the game. Lacey Erickson walked four times and scored once. Frankie Komar also had a double and scored twice.
Chelsea Skinner, Emery’s catcher, walked twice had three hits including a double and scored three times as she batted eighth.
Emery defeated these same Wildcats in Richfield to start the season by a score of 17-7. Eve also had a homerun in this game. Emery’s trip to Kanab was cancelled due to weather.
Emery then went south to St. George and won four games in a tournament. They first defeated Logan 5-0. Emery scored four times in the first inning in getting the win. Jalee had three hits including a triple. Eve and Chelsea each had two hits including a double.
Emery then defeated Park City 15-0. Twelve runs in the first inning had this game over early. This game featured a Miner pitcher that could not throw strikes as she walked 12 Spartans in that inning. Jalee and Eve also had singles in the inning.
Kanab was Emery’s next victim as they fell 11-7. Again Emery got out to the early lead as they scored eight runs in the first inning. Chelsea had a triple and Frankie had a double along with eight singles by other Spartans.
Emery then won their semi-final game over North Sevier 13-0. Jalee led Emery with four runs, three hits and a walk. Carly had four hits including two doubles in the game and scored a run. The championship game against Delta was cancelled due to weather.
Emery is coached by Kelly Alton. Kelly had this to say about his team, “These kids never quit. Even being behind did not change them. It was much warmer today because of the win. These are good kids and they work hard.”
Emery now starts region play with games against North Sanpete at home and Granite on the road.
