Know Before You Go

Desert Edge Yard Sale


Desert Edge Christian Chapel will hold a yard sale on May 5 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and May 6 from 9 a.m-4 p.m. Donations for the yard sale will be taken at Desert Edge, 500 South Main Street, Huntington, anytime during the day. If no one is there, leave your donation at the back door.

Contest to Win a Fishing Trip


Students in seventh-12th grade can win a fishing trip with a DWR conservation officer at one of Utah’s best fishing holes. Write an essay entitled The Best Fishing Trip I Ever Had. The essay must be typed and double spaced, and 300-500 words. The entry deadline is April 21. For more information go to www.wildlife.utah.gov.

Extended Comment Period


The comment period on the draft forest service plan components has been extended to April 30. Summer Biotech Academy

ACT Testing


The next nationwide ACT test date is June 10. Students must register online or have registration postmark deadline is May 19. An additional $18 fee is required for late registration. Register online at www.actstudent.org

Food Handler’s Class


Food handler’s classes will be held in Price on April 18, May 16 and June 14 at 9 a.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Southeastern Utah District Helath Department. Classes will also be taught in Castle Dale at the health department on April 20, May 18 and June 15 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. A class will be taught in Green River at city hall on May 10 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. There is a charge and the class is two hours long. A Look at Buddism

Miss Castle Dale


The Miss Castle Dale Pageant will be held June 2 at the Emery High Auditorium at 7 p.m. Applications are now being taken from ages 5-21. Queens and runner-ups will receive cash prizes. Miss Castle Dale will have the opportunity to be sponsored in the Miss Emery County Pageant. Applications may be obtained at the Castle Dale City Hall. Deadline is May 5. Emery County Historical Society


The Emery County Historical Society’s April meeting will feature the movie Utah’s Blackhawk Indian War, on April 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Museum of the San Rafael. Join them for popcorn and a movie.

One Step Above Dance Review


One Step Above dance review will be held at the Emery County Recreation center on April 29 at 4 p.m. Admission is free and the public is welcome.

Gourd Art


It’s the month of the gourd at the Huntington Library. Two of our local artisans are Sharon Pollaehne and Shawnee Barnes. Their gourd art will be on display all the month of April. Joe’s Valley Water Releases


Because of high anticipated runoff, the Emery Water Conservancy District will begin water releases from Joe’s Valley. Releases will be as much as 300 CFS. Be advised that river flows will be abnormally high and ice on the reservoir will be extremely unstable.

Haircuts in Huntington


Huntington City Youth Council will be doing a community service project for Locks of Love on June 3. Everyone wishing to donate their hair is welcome. Hairstylists will be on hand to style the newly cut hair. Let your hair grow until June 3. Permed and colored hair is OK, no bleached hair.

Bridge Construction Delayed


The bridge reconstruction work that was slated to begin April 3 on US-6, north of Green River, has been delayed. Further notice will be posted before construction is to begin.

Emery All-Star Cheerleading

Warm Pakistan


The Palmers from Salt Lake just completed a blanket drive for the survivors of the recent earthquake in Pakistan. Thousands are suffering from a severe winter, living in tents and damaged structures. They are looking for any donation to help ship the blankets overseas. Accounts are set up at Zion’s Bank and America First Credit Union under the account, Jodie Lynn Palmer, Warm Pakistan Project.

Archaeology Camp and Field School A field school will be held in Range Creek on June 19-23 to 9-12 grade students. Scholarships will be available and the space is limited to six students. Cost is $150. For more information, contact Patsy Stoddard at 381-2431.

Dinosaur Paleontology Camp


A Dinosaur Paleontology Camp will be held on June 19-23 at the CEU Bone Preparation Lab and Price River Quarry Site. The workshop is designed for incoming 10 through 12 grade high school students. Students have to have a 3.0 grade point average or a letter of recommendation from a science instructor. The cost is $200. Sign-ups will be held at the town halls in Ferron, Orangeville, Castle Dale, and Huntington.

Emery County commodities cooking classes will be held on May 10 and June 14 at the Emery County Food Bank and Clothing Exchange (40 South Center, Castle Dale). They will be held from 10 a.m.- 12 noon.

Local Veterans Employment Representative


A local veterans employment representative visits the Castle Dale DWS Office the first Wednesday of each month. Miss Emery Seeks Contestants


The Miss Emery Pageant will be held on July 15 at 7 p.m. The pageant committee is seeking those girls who would like to participate in the pageant.
You can be a junior in high school through 24 years of age. Contestants will participate in swimwear, talent, evening gown and on stage question. Castle Country King Crawlers


Castle Country King Crawlers (CCKC) is your local 4×4 club for Carbon and Emery counties. We hold competitions and monthly trail rides. Tip Line for Drug Violations


A tip line has been introduced in Emery County. The Emery County drug task force is requesting help from the residents to report any suspicious drug activity. The number is 381-2888, and all callers will remain anonymous. It is very important for citizens to be actively involved in helping remove drugs users and pushers from Emery County.
