Two men, Michael Murphy and Jeff Detton of Orem, put in at Fullers Bottom on the afternoon of April 29 intending to float by innertube from there to the Swinging Bridge. Their friend who dropped them off discovered he had given them misinformation on how long the float trip would take. He decided to go into the canyon to help bring his friends out.
Their innertubes had popped and they were left without shoes and were hiking along the side of the river. They met some other hikers who gave them thick socks to wear and food and water. Emery County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the situation and Sheriff Lamar Guymon determined that a raft would put in at Fuller’s Bottom and also search and rescue would walk up the trail beginning at the Swinging Bridge.
Sgt. Jeff Thomas began up the trail with the friend who had hiked back out by the Wedge, and they climbed to a high spot to watch for the two men. They observed the men walking along the trail. EMTs checked the men and found them to be tired, hungry, sunburned and sore footed, but otherwise uninjured on Sunday morning.
