Cade Whittle, Emery High School junior, was Judge for a Day on May 2. Whittle entered an essay contest recently which was centered around 2006 Law Day and won the opportunity to tour Emery County’s Sheriff’s Office, Courthouse and Detention Center. Law Day was May 1, and each of the judicial districts throughout the state participated.
The theme of the contest was Liberty Under Law: Separate Branches-Balanced Powers, and focused on how the branches have their separate spheres and separate powers, but work together for the common good.
Whittle also had the opportunity to meet Judge George Harmond of the Seventh Judicial District, and watch and listen as Judge Harmond passed down rulings from the bench. Hoping for a future as a lawyer, Whittle was looking forward to learn just how accurate TV shows are.
“It was pretty cool. It was a law and motion day, so the court docket was mostly scheduling trials and other things. I want a future in law,” said Whittle.
