World War I, known at that time as “The Great War,” was officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. Not many years after that the Blackburn-Axelson Post number 29 of the American Legion was established in this area. It has been in existence since that time.
There have been a great many men and women from this area that have served their country during that, War to End All Wars, and since then, in various branches of the service. Many of them involved in wars and services all over the world. Some that never returned home. The American Legion has been a very important organization helping veterans and their families over many years.
This American Legion Post has been active for more than 80 years, providing honorary service at funerals, parades and many other activities. The Post is still available and willing to help in any way. However, over the past few years, the number of Legion members has declined as has the other activities that are expected from the American Legion. It would be very sad if our Post dwindled to non-existence.
There is a possibility now of getting some new automatic rifles that could be used at funerals and other activities. Before the paperwork can be done, the Post’s viability must be certain. The Post must remain active.
There is a meeting scheduled on June 2 at 7 p.m. in the Orangeville City Hall. All veterans, old and young, are encouraged to attend this important meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the Legion, the services it provides, what the future holds for the Legion, and how to keep this Post active. This is very important to this area. Try to attend this meeting.
Undoubtedly, there are many veterans in Orangeville and the surrounding area. Take the time to notify any veteran of this meeting and encourage them to attend.
