Letter to the Editor: Driving the price of gasoline

By PAUL L. YOUNG St. George

Editor:
Democrats have finally won and has succeeded driving the price of gasoline up at the pumps. They blocked the drilling of oil and gas in Alaska. Their thinking is that raising the price of gasoline at the pumps will force people in line at the gas station. And will slow global warming, their reasoning.
In 1993, Bill Clinton proposed a 26 cent price increase, Al Gore supported the package and Senator John Kerry suggested a 50 cent tax per gallon on gasoline.
Back in 1982 according to the Energy Information Agency, Congress enacted a moratorium on oil and gas drilling off the coast of California. In 1990 President George H.W. Bush ordered the Department of the Interior not to allow any new drilling on all the east and west coast lines, until the year 2000. Some drilling was allowed in the Gulf of Mexico. No more drilling off the coast of Florida. In 1998, Bill Clinton ordered the President Bush moratorium continued until 2012.
House Resources Chairman Richard Pombo (R.-Calif.) is pushing legislation that would allow each coastal state to decide individually if it wants drilling off its shores.
Congressional Democrats led by liberal House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Dem.-Calif.) are adamantly opposing any development to our own domestic oil supplies to counter escalating gas prices at the pumps. At the present the United States has only 3 percent of the world’s developed oil reserves. Radical extreme environmentalists love the Democrats.
