Brandi Webster and Heidi Vetere go for the block, while Adriana Cordova waits for the return.

Lady Pirates struggle in region play
Although the Green River Lady Pirates are 3-2 in region volleyball, Head Coach Kayce Fluckey is not content with the level of play of her team. Much was expected of the team this season but the players have not had the resolve to be consistent and every game they should have.
According to Fluckey, “We have the ability on this team to beat anybody we play but for some reason we have a mental block that keeps us from winning. Physically and talent wise we are as good as anybody, we are there but mentally we keep ourselves out of games.”
The Pirates have had key player McKenzie Spadafora out all season with mononucleosis and is just now coming back to play. Although she tried to play in August, McKenzie just had no energy and could not do it. She feels she is ready now.
Charle Vetere has been the strongest player for the team so far this season as she moves very well on the floor and does everything asked of her.
Heidi Vetere is coming along very well. She is more aggressive this season at middle hitter. She is averaging 14 kills a game. Volleyball might be her sport if she will keep improving as she has this season.
Adriana Cordova has not had the season that the team hoped for. She was switched from outside hitter to setter this season and has not responded to the demands of the position. Her inconsistency and the return of McKenzie will let her return to her previous position.
Looking ahead, Fluckey is optimistic for the rest of the season. “Our goal is to finish in the top five in state. The key is our region placement. First place has no play-in game, second and third place plays at home for the play-in games and fourth place travels. We do not want to travel, we want to play at home.”
Green River has three region contests left against Monticello, Whitehorse and Monument Valley before playoffs.
