Lady Pirates play at state volleyball

The Green River Lady Pirates made the state volleyball play-offs at UVSC during the last week of October with hopes of doing well and making a run at the title. After defeating Manila on Friday morning, the Pirates lost a heartbreaker to Salt Lake Lutheran Friday afternoon and their title hopes were gone. The Pirates then lost a Saturday morning contest to Layton Christian.
Against Manila, the Pirates were playing well as they dominated the Daggett County school. They won in three straight games, the scores being 25-17, 25-18 and 25-20.
In their quarterfinal match against Salt Lake Lutheran, the Pirates won the first game 25-20. After a second game loss at 18-25, the Pirates came back strong and won game three 25-20. With the win the Pirates were one game away from the semifinals. Unfortunately, Salt Lake Lutheran won two straight nail biters to squeak out the win. Salt Lake won game four 26-24 and then won the match 15-13.
On Saturday, the Pirates lost in four games to a team they should have defeated. Layton Christian won 25-17, 22-25, 25-11 and 26-24. Some teams just do not play as well when they no longer can win the championship. It seems that they lose some of their enthusiasm and spark.
Monticello, who took the region championship over the Pirates, finished third at the state tournament. They defeated the same Salt Lake Lutheran three games to two. Salt Lake finished fifth. Layton Christian lost to Intermountain Christian in the game for seventh place. Rich High School won the tournament for the eighth straight year.
