The Jekyl and Hyde volleyball season for the Emery High Lady Spartans ended with a loss to the Carbon Dinos in Castle Dale. For the first time in a long time, the Spartans failed to win a region contest and did not advance to the state tournament at UVSC.
Emery played well in the first game of the night as they got the win 25-23. In that game, Emery took the lead at 7-6 and led until Carbon tied the score at 22 each. Emery had led 22-19 until the Dino rally. Tied at 22 each, Sierra Bridgewater, one of Emery’s promising sophomores, had a kill to give Emery the lead one more time and then they finished out the game to get the win.

Jodi Robertson, Madison Jensen and Sierra Bridgewater block for Emery.

Bridgewater led the Spartans with three kills and two other hits, as she played great on the front line. Shianne Allred and Jodi Robertson also had kills in the game, both are also promising sophomores. Frankie Komar, another good sophomore, had three aces while serving and set the ball well.
Emery seemed contented with the win as they lost the next three games 25-19, 25-20 and 25-18. In each game, Emery got down early and was never able to recover to challenge the Dinos in any of the games. They trailed 7-12, 8-12 and 6-12 and then never got any closer than three points after that. The intensity of the first game was no longer there.
Out of Emery’s top eight players, four of those are sophomores, two are juniors and two are seniors. While that looks like it will be good for the future because of the experience they received this season, the Dinos’ team looks about like Emery’s. They also have four sophomores in their top eight along with three juniors and a single senior.
