Boy dies in tubing accident

A young boy died from injuries sustained in a tubing accident on Dec. 31, 2006. The 9 year old boy from Santaquin was sledding with his family at Cleveland Reservoir. They were tubing down the hill and out onto the frozen lake. It appeared the boy hit a rock on his way down the hill. His young female cousin was also on the tube with him and she bounced off the tube and was uninjured.
Family members began CPR on the child and continued until EMTs from Huntington arrived at the scene. LifeFlight was also requested by the family. LifeFlight landed on SR-31 at the south end of the reservoir. The boy was carried up the hill to the helicopter. LifeFlight continued to work on the boy, but they were unable to revive him at the scene.
Emery County Sheriff’s Office members, Sgt. Tom Harrison and Deputy Jarod Curtis investigated and assisted at the scene of the accident. The call came into the dispatch at 14:47 hours with a report that a child was not moving or breathing. Family members were also in contact by cell phone with the Carbon County dispatch who were able to provide the first responders with more accurate information on the condition of the child.
Sgt. Harrison reminds everyone to use extra caution when choosing a tubing area and landing zone.
