Lady Pirates on 8-0 streak, lead region

With a blow out victory over region rival Monticello last Friday night, the Green River Lady Pirates are rolling along and rolling over anybody that dares to play them. With a streak of eight straight wins, with a 3-0 region record and with the average margin of victory in those three games at 38 points, with a win over the number-one ranked Tabiona and a number three ranking in the Salt Lake Tribune, the Pirates appear ready to dominate their last six games of the year and head off to state as a team to fear.
Against Monticello, Green River used a magnificent third quarter to bury their opponent. Leading 29-22, Green River won the quarter 19-0 to cruise to victory. Only four Pirates scored in the game. Heidi and Charle Vetere led the effort with 19 points each. Adriana Cordova finished with 12 points and Brandi Webster ended with 10 points.
Over the holidays, Green River traveled to Wayne High School for the Wayne Holiday Classic basketball tournament and came home with a pair of wins. On Friday, they defeated a good Intermountain Christian team 52-48 and on Saturday they defeated the host high school 73-27.
On Friday, Green River got out to a 16-11 first quarter lead and then managed to maintain that margin throughout the game to claim the win. They lost the second quarter 12-11 and then saw the final two periods end dead even at 10-10 and 15-15. Adriana led the team with 17 points followed by Heidi with 14 points. Brandi and Charle each had 9 points in the game. McKenzie Spadafora also scored 3 points. The team was 14 for 24 at the free throw line in this game.
On Saturday, the game was over almost as quickly as it began. Green River got out to a 16-3 lead and never looked back. They won the second quarter 21-12, the third quarter 22-6 and the final period 14-6 to dominate the host team. Heidi again led the team in scoring, this time with 24 points. Charle had 12 points, Brandi had 11 points and Adriana had 10 points. Also scoring in the game were McKenzie with 5 points, Lindsey Spadafora with 2 points, Leah Swalberg with 1 point, Bailie Packer with 4 points and Crosby Hatt with 4 points.
Just before the holidays began, Green River hosted number one ranked Tabiona and got revenge for an earlier narrow loss at Tabiona. The Pirates won the game 55-51. Tabiona led after the first period 11-10 and then trailed at the half 17-23 to Green River. Tabiona narrowed the deficit to 38-37 in the third quarter before Green River won the final period and the game. Charle led the team this night with 24 points including five 3-point shots. Adriana also was in double figures with 15 points. McKenzie had 7 points, Heidi had 4 points and Brandi finished with 3 points.
Green River is the leading scoring team in 1-A basketball with a 65.57 average. They also are second in 1-A basketball with a 23.43 point differential. Adriana leads the team in scoring with a 17.29 average, which is also sixth in the state. Heidi is right behind with a 16.86 average, which is seventh in the state. Charle and Brandi are also scoring in double figures, with a 11.69 and 11.50 average respectively.
Green River now travels to Navajo Mountain this Friday and Monument Valley this Saturday.
