Four Spartans advance to State wrestling
Four Emery High wrestlers placed in the top four spots of their respective weight divisions at the region tournament held in Mt. Pleasant a week ago and traveled this past weekend to Utah Valley State College for the 3-A State championships.
Wade Bohn, who finished the highest at region as he took second, Mike Jones, McKay Allred and Caleb Jones all placed as the Spartan team took fourth overall in the region meet. Delta was first, North Sanpete was second, Carbon was third and Juan Diego was fifth.
At state, Allred, at 125 lbs, started off by facing Casey Pettus of Hurricane. Pettus was last year’s state champ, had a 39-2 season record and went on to win this year’s tournament to repeat as champion. Bad luck to draw the champion right out of the shoot.
Allred then pinned Chris Heaps of Tooele in the first round and then decisioned Cassidy Farnsworth of Union 10-4. Allred lost to Tanner Herrick of Carbon to finish his wrestling.
Mike Jones, at 171 lbs, was pinned by Brian Rose of Morgan. Rose finished fourth last year and came into the meet with a 25-7 record. Rose lost the state championship to Scotty Milne of Logan. Jones then lost to Whit Bundy of Dixie, who also had lost to Milne.
Wade Bohn, at 189 lbs, pinned his first opponent, Isaac Brown of Tooele in the second round. Bohn then lost to this year’s eventual state champ, Nate Carter of Dixie. Carter had finished second last season.
Bohn then pinned Stan Durrant of Morgan before ending his meet with a loss to Justin Stansfield of Ben Lomond. Stansfield won Region 11 and had a record of 33-7.
Caleb Jones was pinned by both his opponents. First was Jason Busenbark of Union and then Craig Goodwin of Snow Canyon.
Allred went into the tournament with a 15-9 record while Jones was 16-9. Bohn had a season record of 25-10 and Jones was 12-18. Jones is a sophomore while the other three are juniors.
