Basketball is a team sport and the Lady Spartans of Emery High School are as good a team as I believe may be found anywhere. They play defense, they play offense and they play together. They are absolutely amazing. This season’s team finished the year with seven different players having scored in double figures in a game with most of them having done that several times. This team finished with seven different players having been the leading scorer in a ball game. This year’s team won 18 games while losing only three, all on the road with all three teams being highly ranked right now.
To close out a perfect region season, the Spartans dominated their opponent again for the seventh time in eight games. They defeated the visiting North Sanpete Hawks 61-35 in a game that was not this close.
Emery started the game on a 14-0 run. During that run they had 5 steals and caused four additional Hawk turnovers. Emery finished the first quarter up 19-3 and led at the half 40-12. North Sanpete was held without a field goal for over 12 minutes, as they were able to score only on free throws. The Emery defense was dominating and the pouty faces of the Hawks said it all, as they had no answer for the Spartan pressure.
Coach Steven Gordon after the game talked about his team, “This was a good defensive effort as we shut them down right off the bat. We played hard, with a lot of energy.”
Meagan Pearson was on fire in this game. Meagan scored 19 points, including three 3-pointers, had 5 steals and 2 rebounds as she only played about half the game. Camille Fehlberg had another of her games that we all take for granted because she, like most of the Emery team, is quick. Camille finished with 13 points, 9 steals, 5 rebounds and 8 assists.
Rachel Rasmussen had 9 points and 4 rebounds, ShiAnne Allred had 6 points and 3 rebounds while Jodi Robertson finished with 6 points and 4 rebounds. Shalae Cox did not score in the game but finished with 7 rebounds and Caitlin Hansen scored 2 points but finished with 8 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Jodie Lundell did not score but contributed good defense in grabbing 4 rebounds, 1 block and a steal. Frankie Komar, Lacey Montgomery and Bailey Kay also scored 2 points each.
It now appears that Emery will host Grantsville in the first round of state play-offs. That game is tentatively set for 7 p.m. this Saturday night in the Spartan Center. Emery defeated Grantsville in December on their court. Coach Gordon talked about what’s next, “I believe that we are ready for the play-offs. We got a taste last year and I believe that taste is going to carry over to this year.”
What taste is he talking about; I think we got a big bite last year and this year we are looking for even a bigger bite. I think the girls want the whole enchilada. Good luck Lady Spartans.
