Ryan Draper slides into home for Emery against Uintah. |
The Emery High baseball team started their season last week with a home game against Uintah and with three games on the road in Moab. At home, they defeated the Utes 9-5 as Kyler Edgehouse pitched well and the team hit well.
On the road in a tournament at Grand High School, Emery defeated Parowan 14-7 in the Friday game and then lost 11-7 to Union before defeating Grand 16-4.
Against Uintah, Edgehouse opened on the mound and pitched three scoreless innings while the Emery offense produced eight runs. With Edgehouse on first base, AJ Mitcheson and Trevor Komar pitched the next 3.3 innings and gave up five runs but the Spartans still led 9-5. With a couple of runners on base, Edgehouse went back to the mound and got the last two batters out as the Spartans get their opening win. The way the umpires and I figure it, Edgehouse got the win and the save although officially it will not show that way.
Emery scored five runs in the first inning as 11 batters went to the plate. Emery scored three more runs in the third inning and one final run in the sixth inning. Ryne Jones had a triple, Blake Mortenson had a pair of doubles and Ryan Draper also had a double. Emery picked up 10 hits and eight walks.
In the game against Parowan, Steve Giles opened on the mound and pitched OK as he allowed three hits and two runs. A couple of errors figured into the runs scoring. Jordan Gee then pitched two innings and pitched OK as he gave up two runs in each of the two innings he pitched. Skylar Jensen pitched the last three innings and shut down Parowan with only one run and three hits in those innings.
Emery scored three runs in the second inning, one in the third, three more in the fourth inning, four in the fifth inning and three in the sixth inning. Blake Mortenson led the team with four hits in five at bats including a double while Edgehouse had three hits in five at bats including a double and a homerun. Dave Justice and Kade Jones each had two hits in the game with Justice also hitting a homerun.
Against Union, Emery got the early lead by scoring two runs in the second and four more in the third inning but Union came on strong in the fourth with five runs, four on a grand slam, and two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to get the win. Ryne Jones was the only batter to get multiple hits as he had three including a homerun. Steve Giles had a triple and Kade Jones, Blake Mortensen and Kyler Edgehouse each had a double.
Edgehouse was back on the mound against Grand and gave up four runs on five hits while striking out 10 batters. On offense, Emery scored four runs in the first inning, three in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and five in the fifth. Ryne Jones hit a homerun with Jordan Gee, Kyler Edgehouse and Dave Justice each having a double.
Emery travels to Cedar City on Wednesday for a game and then will go to Montrose, Colorado for three games this weekend.
