The Emery boy’s basketball season came to an end a couple of weeks ago and it is now time to take a look back and review the season. The team finished its season when they traveled to Logan for a game against the Grizzlies in the first round of the state 3-A playoffs. Final score in that game was 65-51 for Logan. Logan, at the time, was the number three-ranked team in the state.
In that game, Emery got behind early and could never make up ground on the home team. Emery trailed 20-12 after the first quarter and could get no closer than 6 points the rest of the game.
Dempsey Jeffs had the hot hand in this game as he scored 22 points to lead the Spartans. With the Grizzly defense concentrating on stopping Dave Justice, he was only able to score 10 points. Also scoring in the game was Jordan Gee with 5 points, Kyler Edgehouse, Nevin Jensen and Skyler Jorgenson with 3 points each and Tyler Killpack with 2 points.
The Spartans finished the season in third place in region 8 and finished with a record of 10-12. For as young a team as Emery had this season, this was actually a pretty good accomplishment. Emery only returned three players with much varsity experience and had only two seniors on the team.
Justice finished fourth in the state in scoring with a 17.18 average with Jeffs the only other Spartan to finish in double figures with a 10.36 average. Edgehouse finished 12th in the state in number of 3-pointers with 36 and Jeffs finished with 30. The Spartans averaged 55.55 points per game.
