What can residents do to improve their community? Talk with the city council and give them your ideas and solutions. A group of concerned residents of Castle Dale spoke with the city council at the recent meeting and aired some of their concerns.
Concern number one had to do with the abundance of cigarette butts on city streets. The residents recommended the city inform the smokers to take their cigarette butts home with them and dispose of them properly. Smokers need to be reminded that throwing the butts out of the car windows is not proper disposal. These cigarette butts end up in the gutters and get washed down into the drains and may build up and cause many problems.
The need for a street light was the second concern on the group’s list. They asked for one to be installed on Valley View Drive where it intersects with Highway 29. They noted safety as an issue concerning the amount of traffic at this location with no lighting for pedestrians.
Cleanliness of the city streets and sidewalks was also addressed. The group asked the city to remind residents of the private property owners responsibility to keep the sidewalks and gutters clean on their property. Even though this is technically city property, it is the private property owner of the adjacent property to keep it orderly. The sidewalks also need to be kept gravel and rock free year round, as well as snow free in the winter. It is a safety issue for those who use the sidewalks, be it senior citizens or young children.
Private property owners are also responsible to keep trees and shrubs trimmed back away from sidewalks and traffic controls. The group is very concerned over the safety issues of this problem.
The yards of private residents is also a concern, and the health issues involved with trashy areas. Rodent populations seem to increase around homes with yards cluttered with trash or old vehicles. Another health issue is the residents who own dogs and do not clean up the waste around their homes.
Along with the new several new stop signs in the city, the residents need to be reminded of the laws concerning stopping for crosswalks. An existing crosswalk on Center Street and 600 North has been repainted and a crossing guard has been hired to patrol this crosswalk before and after school. The group of residents informed the council of people in cars passing other cars that are stopped for the crosswalk.
The last of the residents concerns was another trash related issue. They have noticed that after all of the city and county functions which take place in Castle Dale, many of the people who attend leave their trash on the ground. People just need to clean up after themselves and teach their children about doing that also. Everyone needs to learn to be responsible for their own actions.
Mayor Neal Peacock expressed his appreciation to the residents for bringing these concerns. “Many of these issues we are already working on. The city’s beautification committee chairperson is GayLee Jeffs and they will be notified of these concerns. We will check out the worst offenders and alert our city’s ordinance enforcement officer.”
