With a meaningless game scheduled against Region 9 runner-up today in Castle Dale, the Emery Spartans will close out the 2007 softball season. Emery closed out their region season last week with a home loss to Juan Diego, final score 7-1. With the loss and with Carbon High’s 7-4 win over Delta, the Spartans will miss this season’s state play-offs.
Leslee Lake led the Spartans in the game with her bat. Besides pitching the whole game, Leslee got three of Emery’s four base hits and scored Emery’s only run. She had two singles and a triple.
Juan Diego scored three runs in the first inning, one each in the fourth and fifth innings and closed out the game with two more in the seventh inning. Juan Diego finished the game with seven runs, 11 hits and two errors.
Bailey Kay had the Spartans only other base hit, a single in the fifth inning. Chantelle Benson was the only Spartan that walked and Adriane Weihing got on base after the catcher missed the ball on a third strike.
Emery finished the season in fifth place in region 8. Juan Diego won the region with North Sanpete finishing second. Delta was third and Carbon took the final play-off spot at fourth. Emery had a 2-10 region record and a 5-15 overall record. Emery averaged 3.38 runs per game while giving up an average of 6.56 runs per game.
This season will bring to a close the coaching of Head Coach Kelly Alton. Kelly is retiring from the Emery school system and will become the principal of the secondary school at Pinnacle Academy next year. Applications for the coaching position have been coming into the school for the past several weeks.
