Stolen guns recovered

Guns reported stolen on April 6 from Ace Hardware in Castle Dale have recently been recovered. The Emery County Drug Task Force has been working on the case. Five hand guns as well as some stolen stereo equipment was recovered from eight individuals in the Emery County area. The suspects range in ages from 13-18.
There is one 13 year old juvenile responsible for the thefts and then the guns were distributed among other juveniles and an adult. It is suspected the guns were exchanged for drugs.
Detective John Barnett from the task force said all five guns were hand guns. The drug task force doesn’t know what the intent of the gun theft was for sure and the intent is still being investigated. This juvenile has a prior juvenile record and is currently in detention on another unrelated matter.
On June 1, through extensive detective work by the Emery County Drug Task Force one of the stolen hand guns was purchased from a juvenile by the task force. This juvenile was arrested and information from this arrest led to the recovery of the other four hand guns which were in the possession of a group of juveniles.
The parents of the juveniles were questioned in the matter and seemed unaware their juveniles had a weapon. The guns were kept hidden by the juveniles.
Detective Barnett reports the juveniles are going through the juvenile court process and the adult will be prosecuted in the Seventh District Court with charges coming from the Emery County Attorney’s Office. Detective Barnett cautions everyone to keep their guns locked up, individuals as well as businesses who sell firearms. It is a very serious matter to have guns stolen and end up in the hands of juveniles. Detective Barnett said he was assisted in the investigation and arrest by Deputy Robby Riley and Deputy Shaun Bell.
