After finishing fifth in American Legion league play, the Helper team had a good run in the state tournament to finish third. Kearns, also the league champion, easily won the state tournament, as their bats just could not be stopped. Cyprus finished second in the tournament and also second in the league.
Helper faced the number one team from the south league and defeated that team, Beaver 9-8 to open the tourney with a win. The Beaver pitcher had control problems to open the game and walked 10 Helper batters in the first three innings. Beaver took the lead in the fifth inning after the Helper team had led all the way till this point. Helper scored three runs in the sixth inning to lead 8-7. Beaver tied the score in the sixth inning and then Helper won in the seventh inning.
Helper then played Smithfield on Monday in their second game of the tournament. Smithfield had a 43-1 record coming into the tournament and they defeated Helper 8-0. Smithfield was a pre-tournament favorite. Kyler Edgehouse pitched the game but got no help from the Helper bats.
On Tuesday, Helper defeated Granger 6-0. Helper and Granger had split their regular season games. Trevor Thompson had the first RBI of game as he scored Aaron Sandoval who had tripled. Edgehouse singled, scored and had an RBI in the second inning as Helper added three more runs.
Helper then defeated Box Elder 11-0 on Wednesday. Edgehouse and Blake Mortensen had doubles in this game. Marcus Zaccaria also had a double and added a triple and JJ Blue hit a homerun.
On Thursday, Helper played Smithfield again and Helper got the win in extra innings. Final score was 4-3. Edgehouse pitched all nine innings in getting the victory. Edgehouse had 12 strikeouts in the game. Mortensen had a double in the game that scored a runner in the fourth inning and then in the eighth inning, Mortensen had another double that scored the winning run.
On Friday night, Helper drew Kearns and Kearns won 15-3. Kearns then went on to defeat Cyprus in the championship game 20-3. Kearns then opened the western region tournament with a big win over California. They also had defeated Nevada and Arizona in the tournament to be the only undefeated team still playing.
Helper, made up this season of Carbon High and Emery High ball players finished in the top three in the state for the fourth time in the past six seasons. The other finishes have all been second place. Congratulations Helper on a good and entertaining season.
