Spartans lose at Juan Diego 35-13
Traveling to Juan Diego for any football team is never an easy thing but traveling there without your leading rusher and leading tackler makes things even harder. The Emery Spartans could not overcome the latter and lost a region football game 35-13.
Ryne Jones injured his foot on his second run of the night a week earlier in the game against Carbon High. After not playing again in that game and sitting all week in practice, it was hoped that the swelling in his foot would subside enough to let him play but it was not to be.
Through the two runs in the Carbon game, Ryne was averaging 11.1 yards per carry on 55 carries. He had run for 612 yards and seven touchdowns. Ryne had also caught nine passes for 146 yards and three more touchdowns. Ryne had also completed a pass for a touchdown. Ryne also led the team in unassisted tackles with 29 and assisted tackles with 25.
Nico Richetti was second on the team in tackles with a combined 40 and also had recovered two fumbles. Colby Snow and Wade Bohn each had 34 tackles. Wade had also caused four fumbles. Mike Jones, Chance Ariotti and Jordan Gee were next with 32 tackles apiece. Cody Allen led the team in interceptions with four from his free safety position.
Before the Juan Diego game, Jordan Gee was averaging 6.9 yards per carry and Mike Jones was averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Mike had six touchdowns and Jordan one touchdown on the ground. Gee is the leading receiver on the team. Before Juan Diego he had 14 catches for 321 yards and had scored seven more touchdowns this way. Jordan added two more receiving touchdowns against Juan Diego as he got to the end zone twice.
Juan Diego’s size was too much for the Spartans. This included size of school and how big the athlete’s actually are. The lineman was huge on both sides of the ball. That size allowed the Soaring Eagles to control the line of scrimmage and to keep Emery at bay most of the game.
Juan Diego scored twice in the first quarter on runs by their quarterback to take the early lead at 14-0. Gee caught a Dempsey Jeffs pass in the second quarter for a touchdown and Emery trailed at the half 14-7. Juan Diego scored twice more in the third quarter on runs of 19 yards and 14 yards before Gee scored on another Jeffs pass. Score was now 28-13. Juan Diego added another touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Before the loss, Emery had won five games in a row and now look to get to their winning ways as they finally come home after a month on the road.
Emery will now host red-hot North Sanpete this Friday in Castle Dale. Emery needs this game in order to host a play-off game down the line.
