Cross-Country second in region, State results
After the Emery boy’s cross-country team finished second at the Region 8 meet in Delta, they went on to run in the state meet at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City and finished 10th. The girl’s team finished fourth in region and finished 12th at the state meet.
At region, senior Tyler Killpack finished second behind a North Sanpete runner with a time of 17:37. Levi Swasey was eighth at 18:44, Bryan Larsen was 14th at 19:06, Spencer Fehlberg was 15th at 19:14 and McKay Allred was 20th at 19:46. Allred usually ran a better time than this but he was sent out fast by Coach Gardner to see what the Hawks would do and that strategy caused his time to suffer.
North Sanpete took the region title with 20 points, Emery was second at 55 points, Carbon was third at 77 points, Delta was fourth at 86 points and Juan Diego was last with 142 points. North Sanpete, besides having the fastest time, also took third, fourth, fifth and seventh. They had three more runners at 11, 12 and 13. Sanpete has a good cross-country program going as you can tell by the numbers.
At the state meet, North Sanpete finished seventh behind Ogden, Park City, Cedar City, Bear River, Judge Memorial and Uintah. Killpack finished 28th at state with a time of 17:40. Luke Puskedra from Judge set a new state record with a time of 14:54.6; the first sub 15-minute time ever ran in Utah.
For the girls’ cross-country team, Lacey Montgomery had the best time of any Spartan and finished 14th overall at region. Rebecca Bott, Natalie Baantjer, Ashley Schade, Jessica Jensen, Tamra Luke and Janelle Urie followed her across the finish line. Lacey had the best time of any Spartan at state at 22:01. The other girls followed in the same order as at region.
Coach Darrell Gardner talked after the meet, “They all are hard workers. They are fun to be with. We just need more kids to run for this school. We need to do like other schools and share the high school kids at this school for the big meets. That is the only way that we can get competitive. The top schools are all the bigger ones in 3-A.”
