Letter to the Editor: Bring back Halloween

By BARBARA PEARSON Elmo

Editor,
My name is Barbara and I have lived in Utah for about 28 years. When I first came here I felt like I had come to the 1900s. I moved from Huntington to Elmo in 1980. I have to honestly admit I did not like this neck of the woods. I lived in California for most of my life and to move to a small town like Elmo, well it was not my thing. I have grown to love my little town of Elmo. People honestly care about each other.
My biggest pet peeve at this time of the year is Halloween. It seems to me like we are all overlooking the meaning of Halloween. There are no more door to door trick or treaters. Now everyone goes to the parking lot and opens their trunks and kids walk around receiving items from the back of a car. This is not Halloween.
What happened to the kids dressing up and gathering on the road to see who is the scariest and who has the best costume. I understand we worry about our kids on the roads but I am here to tell you in all the years I have lived in Elmo no one has ever been hurt, runover, or lost from a parent.
Come on everyone, let’s bring trick or treat back to what it really means. If you don’t want to take your child out door to door then take them to one of the many carnivals that are sponsored at this time of the year. I have spoken to many adults who miss the children coming to their homes and knocking on their doors; so come on everyone speak up and let everyone know how you really feel about the loss of Halloween.
How would the adults who decided to do the trick or trunk had their Halloween taken away when they were younger. I can guarantee that everyone has many memories of their Halloweens and would not trade them for anything. Think of our children and what they are missing. What will we change next, the right to go sledding and hay rides because we are becoming so afraid of everything that we do now adays? Next we will stop celebrating Christmas. Lets see how many more traditions we can take from our children.
Halloween has always been my favorite holiday and now I cannot even enjoy the little ones coming to my home and receiving a small treat. I hope we can go back to traditions. Lets change it this year and start trick or treating from door to door. I know my kids and grandkids plan on taking the holiday back to the original reason we celebrate our many holidays through the year. After all its only one night out of every year. Hope to see you on the road this year and if not that is your loss.
