The new Veteran’s memorial is nearing completion. The Gary Prazen statue is almost finished and once it and the cannon are in place the monument will be complete.
The large monuments were built by the Worley-Jensen monument company of Price. Ernest Jensen construction did the block and cement work. A large pedestal in the middle will be the home of the bronze statue of the soldier.
The five monuments to the rear of the memorial contain the Vietnam War, World War I and II, the Korean conflict and the Desert Storm/Iraqi freedom wars. “We all owe our freedoms to the veterans of this country who, in some cases gave their all, and this monument will serve as a place where they can go to begin their healing process,” said American Legion Commander Ray Quinn. Many of the veterans have horrendous memories of the things they have seen and Quinn hopes they can go to the monument site to reflect and heal.
Each monument contains information and a picture pertaining to that war. Quinn has been instrumental working with the Emery County Commissioners in obtaining the funding to install the monument. Former Commissioner Ira Hatch began the project and is a member of American Legion Post 73. Emery County has also contributed by donating the space at the Museum of the San Rafael and with construction costs.
As the memorial nears completion plans are being made for a public celebration of the project. This will be held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 12 at the memorial
