Jay Peck Howell
FERRON-Jay Peck Howell, 66, returned to his Father in Heaven on Oct. 31, 2007, in Provo, Utah. Jay was born Sept. 7, 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah the youngest of three children born to Burt W. Howell and Helen I. Peck. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, John H. and Nellie C. Peck. He married Sandra M. Laymon Howell on April 20, 1979 in Elko, Nev. Their marriage was solemnized on April 20, 1991 in the Manti LDS Temple.
Jay was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from West High School in 1959 and later moved to Ferron, Utah where he has lived for the past 26 years. He was a member of the Utah Air National Guard for six years. He enjoyed working for Ashworth Transfer for more than 25 years at the power plant. Jay enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, and camping. He loved to travel with his wife to the Eastern States and Australia.
Jay was an active member of the LDS church where he served in many capacities including Executive Secretary, in the Elders Quorum Presidency, and the Castle Valley Pageant Presidency for four years. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra of Ferron; son: Dayne J. Howell of Ferron; daughter: Kelli (Rod) Cray of Reno, Nev.; step-son: Gary Ruybal of Salt Lake City; and step-daughter: Bonnie (Bobbie) Hancock of Parachute, Colo.; two sisters: Kathleen Sanders and Joan (Patrick) Trujillo, both of Salt Lake City; two brothers-in-law: Don (Barbara) Laymon and Ronald (Sue) Laymon, also of Salt Lake City; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and a brother-in-law, Fred Sanders.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, at 2 p.m. at the Bluehills Ward Chapel, 35 West 200 North, Ferron. A visitation was held from 12-1:45 p.m. prior to the services at the church Burial was at the Ferron City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Aurelia M. Cooley
PRICE-Our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, godmother, friend, neighbor and confidant passed away on Nov. 2, 2007, in her home in the presence of her family at the age of 85 after a short battle with cancer.
Aurelia M. Cooley was born on March 31, 1922, to Margherita Stabilini and Andrea Marinoni on a farm in Arimo, Idaho. Married Charles Louis (Lupo) Cooley on June 18, 1949; later divorced. She attended elementary school in Arimo, Idaho; Notre Dame School in Price Utah; St. Patrick’s in Lead, S.D.; Sundance Elementary in Wyoming; St. Joseph’s in Deadwood, S.D.; and graduated in 1940 from Deadwood High School in South Dakota.
Aurelia worked as a telephone operator for nine years in Deadwood, S.D.; Bremerton, Wash.; and Price, Utah. She was a bookkeeper from 1944-1957 at Soldier Canyon Fuel Company for her father; owner/partner from 1957-1974 of Premium Coal Company along with her three brothers.
She was secretary/treasurer from 1977 to present for Sinbad Land Corporation.
As an active member of the Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church she served as a lector, an extraordinary eucharistic minister to shut-ins, assisted parish priests at Mass at the nursing homes, was a RCIA sponsor, on the finance committee, attended daily Mass, and was a prayer warrior. She was a member and officer of the Notre Dame Women’s Group and held offices on the Southeastern DCCW. She was honored as the Notre Dame Woman of the Year in 1990. She was a volunteer bookkeeper for Notre Dame Church Parish from 1984-1995, and gave of her time and talent to all Notre Dame School and Church fund raisers and was honored with the Notre Damean Award for outstanding service to Notre Dame Regional School in June 1987.
She was a 20 year sponsor for a child through the Christian Foundation of Children and Aging. As a world traveler she went on six Marian pilgrimages to seven countries on three continents along with daughter Madalene. She had a great devotion to our Blessed Mother and the rosary and was a promoter of devotion to Jesus of Divine Mercy and also to Jesus King of All Nations.
She was a member of SNPJ Slovenian Lodge #113 since 1950 and secretary/treasurer for 10 years. She was the line dance instructor for 12 years at the Carbon County Senior Citizen’s Center. She had a thirst for knowledge and took classes at CEU in accounting, Italian, auto mechanics and swimming. She took the Dale Carnegie course and loved to converse with everyone she met. She loved to garden, can produce, bake potica and strudel.
Survived by her daughters Cathryn McCourt, Grand Junction Colo., and Madalene Williams, Price Utah; four grandchildren: Jenny (Robert) Richens, Michael McCourt, Chellie McCourt and Cassie Rogers; six great-grandchildren: Cody, Courtney and Blake McCourt; Dakota Rogers; Alexandria and Andrew Richens; sister Ancelia Marchino, brother John Marinoni and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by parents, brothers Clemente and Joseph.
Funeral Mass, Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, 10 a.m., Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church. Rosary service was held Monday evening 7 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home. Family was at Mitchell’s Monday and Tuesday one hour prior to services. Committal service, Price City Cemetery.

Judie Bruno
SPRING GLEN-Judith Lewis Bruno, age 65, passed away suddenly Oct. 29, 2007 in Price.
She was born Aug. 17, 1942 in Price to Evan Andrew Lewis Jr. and Virginia Harriet Smith. After her father’s passing in 1962, her mother later married Tony Pagano.
On Sept. 9, 1966, Judie married Tom Bruno in Elko, Nev. and their marriage was later blessed at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Helper.
She was a longtime resident of Carbon County and a graduate of Carbon High School Class of 1960. Judie retired as the District Juvenile Court Clerk with the State of Utah after 31 years of service. She served as Secretary/Treasurer for the Joe’s Valley Culinary Water for 15 years, recording secretary for Xi Alpha Zeta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi for 2007-2008, and was a member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed her many associations and her parting will leave a void that can never be filled.
Judie enjoyed bowling, crafts, needlework, and caring for family and friends. She shared a deep love for all animals and she enjoyed riding horses with the Star Riders. Her pride and joy was her yard, and she especially enjoyed caring for her flowers and vegetables. It was through this passion that she looked forward to exchanging new plants with her dear friend Vange Mills. “It was said that they could never have enough plants, let alone throw one away.”
Judie is survived by her husband, Tom Bruno, Spring Glen; sister, Andrea Tempfer, Clinton, Utah; children, Tom (Johnna) Boyack, Spring Glen, Wendy (Colin) Morf, Hillsborough, Calif.; grandchildren, Ashley and Rachel Boyack; and many loving nieces, nephews and a community of dear friends and neighbors.
Funeral Mass was Friday, Nov. 2, 2007 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Vigil Service was held Thursday evening, 7:30 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home in Price. Family was at Mitchell’s Thursday and Friday one hour prior to services. Committal service, Mt. View Cemetery, Helper.
In remembrance of Judie’s love for children, memorial contributions may be made to Primary Children’s or the Shriner’s Hospital For Children.
Mary Lucille Oviatt Judi
Mary Lucille Oviatt Judi passed away at the age of 83 on Nov. 1, 2007, at her daughter’s home in Lehi, Utah.
Lucille was born on June 13, 1924 in Hiawatha, Utah. She was the fifth of seven children born to James and Ruth Oviatt. She was raised in Carbon and Emery counties and spent the last three years of her life living in Lehi with her daughter.
She married Jack Judi on June 16, 1944 in Price, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple. Her happiest times were spent raising her family in Hiawatha.
Her greatest joy in life was to serve others. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved and cared for her family. She was selfless in caring for her diabetic daughter, Becky, and gave constant care to her husband, Jack, in his final years. She was a faithful member of the LDS church and served in many callings. She especially enjoyed serving with Jack in the Manti Temple and in their calling as LDS Church employment specialists.
She enjoyed holiday family traditions, such as cooking for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, going to the desert for Easter and decorating her house for the seasons.
She was proceeded in death by her husband; her daughter, Becky; her son, Terry; her grandson, Terry Haslam; her parents; her brothers Dal and Gerald; and her sister, Theressa Frandsen.
She is survived by her daughter, Shaunna (Bruce) Haslam of Lehi, Utah; son, Vaughn (Marianne) Judi of Castle Dale, Utah; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; brother, Theron Oviatt; sisters, Myra Ricks, and Kathryn (Kenneth) Pierce.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 5 at 12 noon at the Price Fifth ward chapel, 545 East 400 North. A viewing was held Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Fausett Mortuary, 680 East 100 South, Price, Utah, and one hour prior to funeral services. Interment will follow at the Price City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (jdrf.org) in Becky Poglajen’s name.
