Lady Pirates begin basketball season

With four starters from last season graduated, the Green River Lady Pirates knew that this season could be a struggle at the beginning of the season. Green River has dropped their first three games of the young season.
Green River opened at the road at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield with a pair of losses. First, Rich High won the season opener 59-22 and the next night Bryce Valley won 42-28. Green River opened the home season with a 42-34 loss to Grand High School.
Rich High School outscored Green River 19-3 in the opening quarter to easily roll to the win. Rich outscored Green River in each of the next three periods also. The second quarter score was 15-7, the third quarter score was 17-8 and the final quarter was 8-4.
Brandi Webster led the team with 8 points. Jill Vetere scored 4 points, Tracy Engleman scored 3 points, Bailie Packer, Leah Swalberg and Crosby Hatt each scored 2 points and Lindsey Spadafora had a single point.
On Saturday night, Bryce Valley also opened the game with a huge first quarter. They won the period 17-4. Green River played fairly even after that period.
Crosby was the leading scorer with 10 points, Bailie and Brandi each scored 4 points and Leah, Jill, Lindsey and Sarah scored 2 points each.
At home against Grand, the Devils won the opening quarter 9-3, a much better quarter for the Pirates. Green River took the second period 10-2 to lead at the half 13-11. It was the third quarter that got the Pirates in this game as Grand won the period 18-6 before Green River won the final quarter 15-13.
Jill lead the team in this game with 10 points, Leah scored 9 points, Brandi scored 5 points, Crosby scored 4 points and Bailie and Tracy each scored 3 points.
Against Rich, Green River made 6 of 14 free throws. Against Bryce, Green River made 18-of 28 free throws and against Grand, Green River made 19 of 35 free throws.
Green River now goes on the road to play at St Joseph.
