Sierra Bridgewater fights for the rebound against Waterford. |
The Emery High Lady Spartans prepared for their annual ambitious week with a pair of home victories on the Spartan Center basketball court. Emery defeated a good Richfield team 61-48 and absolutely thumped an overmatched Waterford team 72-15 in preparing for this week’s four games.
Every December, Emery plays a big schedule to prepare for the February play-offs. This season will see the Spartans host Uintah on Tuesday night and then travel to the St. George area for three games to close out the week. Emery will play at Pine View on Thursday night, play at Dixie Friday night and then stop at Cedar on the way home Saturday.
Against Richfield, Emery trailed after the first quarter 12-10. In the second period, Coach Steve Gordon pulled his starters at 6:32 of the period trailing 16-12. After a brief sideline chat, the starters went back into the game at 5:18 and Emery trailing 15-19.
The game was now all Emery. The Spartans went on a 21-0 run to lead 36-19. The intensity of the five players both individually and as a team shocked the Wildcats. Frankie Komar hit three quick 3-pointers and Jodi Robertson had a couple of baskets including a 3-pointer and four free throws to pace the Spartans. Meagan Pearson hit another 3-pointer and a free throw and Michonne Robertson had a basket and Emery now had a big lead.
In the third quarter, Emery took a beating from the relentless Richfield team but actually won the period 16-15 to lead 54-37.
Four Spartans finished in double figures for scoring for the night. Jodi led the way with 16 points followed closely by Frankie with 13 points. Meagan had 11 points and Michonne had 10 points. Jodi also had 4 steals, Meagan had 7 rebounds, Caitlin Hansen had 3 blocked shots and Michonne had 3 blocks, 3 steals and 4 rebounds. Lacey Montgomery also had 3 steals and 3 points. Sierra Bridgewater had 4 points; Abbie Kay and Tiffany Tuttle each had 2 points.
On Thursday night, Emery had their way with Waterford in all three games. The sophomores and the JVs each won as big as the varsity did. Waterford is a new 3-A team this season that is located in Sandy. They are a private school. Although new to 3-A, they have played 1-A ball the last few years. When they scheduled this game, they believed that they would be decent this season but it appears that hope is still off in the future.
There is not a lot you can say about this game other than the girls really needed a breather after a rigorous season so far. Emery won the first period 20-8 which at least gave us hope that this would be a game unlike the first two of the night, but alas it was not to be. Emery won the second period 22-3, the third period 19-1 and the final period 11-3. Everybody in uniform played in the game including a couple of freshmen that returned to the bench.
In the game everyone appeared relaxed as the Spartan shot the ball really well in the game. In the first half, Emery was 7 for 13 on 2-point shots, 7 for 11 on 3-point shots and 7 for 7 at the free throw line. That is a combined 21 for 31 shooting for 67 percent. It is just to bad that they missed those easier 2-point shots that probably were closer to the basket.
Meagan finished with 13 points, Frankie with 12 points and Jodi, Michonne and Lacey with 8 points each. Sierra, Abbie and Tiffany all finished with 6 points each.
