Green River basketball keeps getting better

Green River defeats Meridian boys, girls

The Lady Pirates won their third game of the season while the boys team got their first win of the season as both teams defeated Meridian last week in Green River. The girls won 46-33 and the boys followed with a 62-38 victory.
Brennan Bigelow led the team with 23 points including three 3-pointers as the Pirate team finally tasted victory this season. After losing seven straight games, Green River used a big first half to get the lead and then coasted to the win.
Green River outscored Meridian 12-3 in the opening quarter and followed that with 20-5 second quarter to lead 32-8 at the half. Each team then scored 12 points in the third quarter and 18 points in the final period.
Wayde Mecham and Tyson Johnson also finished in double figures in the game. Wayde scored 14 points while Tyson scored 10 points. Luis Mendoza scored 5 points, Jason Johnson scored 4 points, Holden Marshall scored 2 points and Marvin Arnold also scored 2 points.
The Lady Pirates opened the game with a good first quarter but then had to wait until the final period to finally grab the win. After leading 11-6 after one period, Meridian outscored the Pirate team 7-5 in the second period and 11-8 in the third period to tie the score 24-24 after three quarters. Finally in the closing quarter, Green River took control and won the period 22-9 to win the game.
Bailie Packer and Brandi Webster each scored 13 points. Crosby Hatt scored 8 points, Mecham added 6 points, Leah Swalberg scored 5 points and Tracy Engleman scored 1 point.
The Lady Pirates played Whitehorse after this paper went to press last Friday and will play at Tabiona on Jan. 4. The boys play at Wayne on the 28 and then will host Altamont on Jan. 5.
