The Green River Pirates finally put a couple of good games together last week and won their first region game of the year. They started the week off with a big win over neighboring Grand and then defeated Monument Valley in region play.
The Lady Pirates also won a pair of region ball games over Monticello and Monument Valley. The scores for the boys were 51-29 over Grand and 74-44 over Monument Valley. For the Lady Pirates, the scores were 55-48 over Monticello and 60-36 over Monument Valley.
The two wins for the Lady Pirates were their fourth and fifth victories in a row as they appear poised to do well for the rest of the year. Brandi Webster had her third consecutive big game as she scored 27 and 32 points in the two contests. She had scored 24 points against Tabiona a week ago.
Against Monticello, the two teams were tied at 9-9 after the first quarter and Green River trailed at the half 27-24. Monticello extended their lead in the third quarter to 42-37 before Green River owned the final period. In that last quarter, Green River won the period 18-6 to grab the win.
Besides Webster’s big game, six other Pirates scored in the game. Crosby Hatt scored 7, Jill Vetere scored 6, Sara Swalberg scored 4, Tracy Engleman scored 3 and Leah Swalberg and Mecham scored 2 points each.
Against Monument Valley, Green River took the early lead and then scored at will through the first three quarters. They won the opening quarter 17-11 and the second quarter 12-4 to lead at the half 29-15. With a 22-2 third quarter, the Pirates won their third region game.

Leah scored 9 points in this game with Jill adding 8 points. Crosby put in 6 points along with Mecham. Tracy, Sara and Bailie Packer each scored 2 points.
Three Pirates finished in double figures in the victory over Grand. Kayden Mecham led the way with 19 points while Jason Johnson scored 14 points and brother Tyson Johnson scored 12 points. Brennan Bigelow scored 4 points and Luis Mendoza scored 2 points.
After leading 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, Green River used a 16-3 second quarter to go up big on Grand. Green River won each of the last two periods to easily win.
Green River easily won three of the four quarters in the win over Monument Valley. The second period was 22-9 for the Pirates and the final period was 24-9 for Green River.
Five Pirates finished the game in double figures with three of them also finishing the game with double digit rebounds. Tyson Johnson scored 19 points and pulled down 18 rebounds. Kayden scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds while Jason Johnson scored 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Brennan scored 11 points and Luis scored 12 points. Earl Nelson scored 2 points.
