Sierra Bridgewater takes one up to the hoop against Juan Diego. |
Both region games last week were over almost as soon as they had started as the Lady Spartans romped to wins over region foes Juan Diego and Delta. At home against the Soaring Eagles, Emery won 68-27 after leading 17-7 at the end of the first quarter. At Delta it was even better as Emery won 66-24 after leading 19-3 after the first quarter.
It is easy to spread playing time when the scores are so lopsided. Ten different Spartans scored in each game last week and 12 for the week.
In the Juan Diego game, Emery led 25-14 in the second period when Emery went off on one of their patented defense runs and scored 9 points in 1:30. It was a case of Emery’s press rattling the opponent into turnovers, which turn into easy baskets. This actually happens quite consistently for Emery. Michonne Robertson led the Spartans with 8 points in the period.
In the third quarter, no team scored for almost half of the period. Then just like that again, Emery scored 10 points in less than a minute and finish with 20 points for the quarter. Meagan Pearson hit back to back three-pointers, Frankie Komar hit a three and a lay-up, Jodi Robertson had a pair of baskets and ShiAnne Allred and Michonne each had a basket in that flurry of Emery points.
The Emery reserves played the final period and Emery continued their dominance as they outscored the Eagles 14-8. Lacey Montgomery scored 7 points and Sierra Bridgewater scored 5 points.
For the game, Meagan finished with 13 points, Michonne finished with 11 points and Frankie finished with 10 points. ShiAnne had 8 points, Jody and Lacey each had 7 points, Caitlin and Sierra each had 5 points and Abbie Kay scored a point.
Against Delta, Emery not only scored big the first period but they easily kept the Rabbits as bay in every period. Emery won the second quarter 16-11. Emery won the third quarter 16-4 and then won the fourth quarter 15-6.
Jodi Robertson had a great game with 20 points. Jodi hit four 3-pointers to go along with 3 baskets and a couple of free throws. Jodi had 8 points in that opening period when Emery blew open the game.

Also finishing in double figures was Meagan with 13 points and Frankie with 10 points. Frankie and Meagan each had a pair of 3-pointers. For whatever reason, Delta sat in a zone all game long as they left the outside shot open and the Spartans took advantage of that with excellent shooters. Emery hit 10 3-pointers in the game as Jenni Stinson and Lacey Montgomery also each hit one.
In this game, Michonne finished with 5 points, Caitlin and Abbey each finished with 4 points, Lacey and Jenni each had 3 points, and ShiAnne and Tiffany Tuttle each had 2 points.
This week Emery will travel to Carbon to play the Dinos in a showdown of region contenders. Besides the region implications that go with this game, there is the rivalry factor and the of course the fact that Emery won last season and Carbon came close. This game is Tuesday in Price.
On Thursday, Emery will host North Sanpete as the first half of region comes to a close.
Coach Gordon is happy with the progress of his team, “We are playing better defense and running the floor better right now. Good defense leads us to so many easy scores.”
