Jordan Gee heads for the hoop. |
After another loss to Delta and the narrow losses in region play so far in this basketball season, the Emery Spartans almost were doomed when it came to the opportunity of playing some post-season basketball this year. Another convincing win over the Carbon Dinos have left the Spartans in a tie with Carbon and Juan Diego for third place in region 8.
Although the team is not out of the woods yet, they now at least have an opportunity to control their own destiny. With Carbon playing Juan Diego next week, one of those teams will have another loss and one another win. If Emery can defeat North Sanpete at home on Wednesday night, then we could finish as high as third and live to play another day. We will have a better idea a week from now.
Emery traveled to Delta on Wednesday and lost 68-40 as the Rabbits shot the ball very well. It seemed that every thing they would let go found its way into the basket. Emery on the other hand could not buy a basket in the second and third quarters.
On Friday night, Emery traveled to Price and defeated Carbon for the second time this season by a score of 69-56. Dempsey Jeffs and Jordan Gee each shot the ball well in this game.
Jordan probably played his best game of the season. Jordan scored 6 points in the first quarter to help Emery take the early lead. Jordan scored another 8 points in the third quarter to help Emery keep the lead after the half and then Jordan went 6 for 6 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Jordan finished with 20 points and had several big steals as he played great defense all night.
Dempsey also had a good game. Dempsey had 8 points in the first quarter as he scored on all the shots he took. Dempsey scored 10 points in the final period to end the night with 25 points.
Emery led 19-8 after one period, 34-24 at the half, and 49-34 after three periods.
Besides Jordan and Dempsey, six other Spartans scored in the game. Gatlan Huntington finished with 7 points, Nevin Jensen finished with 6 points and Karson Jensen finished with 5 points. Tyler Killpack, Colton Barnett and Cameron Hansen each scored 2 points.
At Delta, Emery kept it close for a period but then got blown out in the second quarter. After trailing 13-9, Emery was outscored 25 to 6 in the second quarter to trail 38-15. Emery was outscored by 5 points in the third period and then tied Delta in the fourth period.
Dempsey again led the team in scoring, this time with 16 points. Karson was in double figures for the night with 12 points. Nevin scored 5 points and Cameron, Tyler and Jason Giles each scored 2 points. Gatlan scored 1 point in the game.
