Pirates defeat number one Dugway

Pirates split games, prepare for play-in game

It was an odd basketball week for the Green River Pirate team as they first defeated the previously undefeated Dugway Mustang team and then lost to Wasatch Academy.
On Tuesday, Green River defeated Dugway 46-43. Dugway was 18-0 before the game and ranked number one in 1-A boys basketball. Dugway is the region 18 champion.
Green River took the first quarter lead at 17-11 as the Pirates played well. The second quarter score was reversed and the two teams went to halftime tied at 28-28. Dugway outscored Green River 9-7 in the third quarter but the Pirates came back strong in the last period to grab the lead and then the win.
Brennan Bigelow led the way with 13 points. Jason and Tyson Johnson each scored 9 points, Kayden Mecham scored 8 points and Luis Mendoza scored 7 points.
On Saturday after the big win, Green River lost to Wasatch Academy who had a record of 5-9. Green River had the first quarter lead at 10-9 and the halftime lead at 21-19. Wasatch outscored the Pirates in both of the second half periods to grab the win.
Bigelow again was the leading scorer with 12 points, Mecham scored 11 points, Tyson Johnson scored 10 points, Jason Johnson scored 6 points and Mendoza scored 2 points.
Green River now has a season record of 5-14 and a region record of 2-3.
Green River lost this past week to Monticello by a score of 93-53. They will have their play-in game on Tuesday against Mount Vernon at 5 p.m. in Green River. If they win this play-off game they will play in the state tournament on Wednesday in Richfield beginning at 10 a.m. They will play against the Region 17 second place team which is Intermountain Christian.
