Plans are underway for the Miss Emery 2008 pageant. Pageant organizers want to encourage the young ladies of the county to try out for Miss Emery. Young ladies between the ages of 17-24 are eligible to try out. This is a scholarship pageant and the winner receives a scholarship of $1,000 to the school of her choice and a new computer. The first attendant receives $700 and the second attendant $500 in scholarship money.
Current 2007 Miss Emery is Karrie Johansen. Johansen said, “Being Miss Emery has been a lot of fun. The computer has really helped out at college this year. One of the things you do as Miss Emery is to help with the fair. It was really fun being at the fair and talking to the county people. I loved helping with the Dice Game. The lady won $5,000 and that was so exciting to be a part of that. My attendant, Lacey Branson and I helped with the rodeo and the Tough Enough to Wear Pink night. This was a fund raiser for breast cancer awareness and the rodeo donated the funds raised to help cancer patients in our area. We were really glad we could help with this event.
“Miss Emery rides in the parades throughout the county and also helps with other city pageants. I have really learned a lot by being involved in pageants. It really helps with your self esteem to get up in front of people and perform. It is a real confidence booster. If I could encourage the young ladies in this age group to try out I would do it. It is very worthwhile and rewarding. I am preparing now for the Miss Utah competition to be held in July in Salt Lake. This will be a great experience getting together with girls from the entire state of Utah. I am really looking forward to that.
“At the Miss Emery pageant you perform in the opening number, private interview, swimsuit, talent, on-stage question and evening wear. You aren’t judged on the opening number, it’s just for fun. I really enjoyed the private interview. It really gives you a chance to be yourself before the judges. They ask a lot of questions and you never know what they are going to ask you about. It can be almost anything. They asked me questions about why I want to be a lawyer. They really get you thinking on your feet which is sometimes hard to do if you’re nervous. I would recommend the pageant experience to anyone. Another thing we have going right now is to choose a Little Miss Emery who will accompany me to the Miss Utah pageant. The chosen girl, will have a tea party with all the contestants and receive a dress and a Miss Utah gift packet with the things they need to appear on stage at Miss Utah in July. The Little Miss last year was Savannah Woolsey. We have the Little Miss pageant scheduled for May 31 at Huntington Elementary. This pageant is open to any girl in the county ages 5-8. I just want to encourage both young girls and older girls to get involved in pageants. They really are a great place to learn new skills,” said Johansen.
The Miss Emery pageant is scheduled for July 19 at 7 p.m.
