After winning convincingly in St. George the week before, the Emery High Lady Spartan softball team came home and romped to another victory, this time over North Sevier 13-1. Emery took the first inning lead of 3-0 and never looked back.
To top off this win, in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Spartans leading 9-1 and needing two runs to end the game with the 10-run rule, freshman Markette Tanner took a 1-0 pitch deep over the left-center field fence for a grand-slam homerun to end the game.
In that first inning, Adriane Weihing and Chelsea Skinner walked, Leslee Lake hit into a fielder’s choice and Bailey Kay then doubled to centerfield to score Adriane and Leslee. Kay would later score on a wild pitch.
Emery then had a big third inning. Chelsea walked and Leslee doubled to get the inning started off right. After Bailey flew out to center field to score a run, Candice Norton got on base due a third baseman error. Whitney Allen singled to left field to score another run. After a Tanner walk, Jalee Jensen and Adriane both singled. All but Adriane would score as aggressive base running kept North Sevier off balance throughout the game. Chelsea flew out to right field to end the inning. Emery now led 9-0.
North Sevier scored their lone run in the top of the fifth inning. The lead off batter singled, a bunt sent her to second base and she would later score on another single. Leslee Lake was on the mound again for Emery and gave up only five hits in the six-inning game. Leslee struck out five batters and walked none.
North Sevier’s only other threat came in the second inning when four Wolves got on base but the first was thrown out at the plate by outfielder Bailey Kay and then Leslee struck out the last batter with the bases loaded to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth inning before Tanner would hit her homerun, Leslee singled to open the inning, Bailey then singled and Candice walked to load the bases. After Whitney Allen flew out to short left field, Tanner stepped up and hit the first homerun of the season for the Spartans.
The Emery JV played their first game of the season and won their game 12-5 after having been down 5-1. With the early season attention being placed with the varsity team, it was nice to see the JV’s continue the winning efforts.
Emery will play two more preseason games this week before region 8 action starts the following week. Emery will host South Sevier on Tuesday with game time set for 4 p.m. and a JV contest right after. Emery will then travel to Hurricane on Wednesday with the freshmen/sophomore team scheduled for their first action.
