The Emery High Lady Spartans traveled to Delta last Tuesday and came home with a two-game sweep of their region opponent by the scores of 3-0 in the first game and 12-0 in the nightcap. With the two wins, Emery is now 12-3 for the season and 4-2 in region 8 play.
Senior Leslee Lake pitched both games and came home with complete game shutouts. In the first game, a seven-inning affair, Leslee induced a ground ball out and two strikeouts in the first inning. In the second inning, she got three easy ground outs followed by two more groundouts in the third inning and another strikeout.
Delta’s first base runner of the game got on in the fourth inning due to an error but Leslee got two more groundouts and another strikeout to close out the inning. The fifth inning saw a popup to the catcher, another grounder and another strikeout. In the sixth inning, it was two grounders and another popup, this time back to the pitcher. Leslee finally gave up a hit in the seventh inning but a strikeout and two more grounders surrounded it and the game was over.
Emery scored three runs in the top of the first inning and then went down pretty much 1-2-3 the rest of the game. In the first inning after an Emery groundout and strikeout, Chelsea Skinner walked and scored on a double by Lake. Leslee then scored on a double by Bailey Kay. Kay scored on a single to left field by Candice Norton. Emery’s only other base runner came in the fifth inning when Jalee Jensen singled to centerfield.
In the second game, Emery’s bats came alive as Emery scored 12 runs on 17 base hits. All nine Emery batters got at least one base hit in the game and Jalee Jensen, Leslee Lake and Keera Allred led the way with each having three base hits in the five-inning game. Leslee had two doubles in the game and Jalee, Chelsea, Whitney Allen and Markette Tanner each had one double.
In the first inning, Emery scored three times. Jalee singled, Chelsea doubled, Leslee doubled, Bailey Kay singled and Candice Norton singled as the first three runners scored.
Emery added two more runs in the second inning. Keera singled, Jalee singled and Adriane Weihing had a bunt for a single and Keera and Jalee scored.
Emery added the rest of their runs in the fifth inning. Leslee singled to open the inning, Bailey grounded out to shortstop and then Whitney and Candice doubled to left field and Markette doubled to right field. Keera then singled to left field followed by Jalee hitting a double to rightcenter field. Adriane then singled to center field and Chelsea hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Jalee. Leslee followed with a double to score Adriane and Emery was now up 12-0.
Leslee pitched a no-hitter in this game as only one batter got on base. The very first batter of the game became a runner due to an infield error but then Leslee induced 15 straight batters to get out. There were seven fairly easy groundouts, three strikeouts, four infield pop ups and a soft fly to Bailey Kay in right field.
Emery will now travel to Carbon Tuesday for a double header and then will be at home Thursday against Delta in a single varsity game plus JV and sophomore/freshmen action.
