Community theatre requests donation

Karen Truman from the Community Theatre was on hand to request a donation from Emery County for the Community Theatre. Their production for 2009 will be Lil Abner and will include a large cast. “It’s a silly and fun show,” said Truman. In 2008 the production was the Sound of Music. The commission approved a $250 donation for the community theatre. Truman also said in the off year of the Castle Valley Pageant, the community theatre would like to do a large production during fair time to give the people coming to the fair something else to do. The Castle Valley Pageant will be presented in 2008 and skip 2009 and back in 2010.
The commission looked at a request from Joe Jensen for a lot fee waiver for the Lawrence Cemetery. He purchased six lots in 1986, but needs the documentation saying he already owns them. The commission approved this action. The commission approved the repair of the Ferron Library roof. Stilson Construction was awarded the bid.
In other business an ambulance write-off was give for a deceased patient.
The commission approved a roll-up door for the office for the new swimming pool. This item wasn’t included in the bid.
The commission approved Commissioner Jeff Horrocks to vote representing the county at the Emery Telcom annual meeting on May 8 at Canyon View Junior High.
Martin Wilson was approved as a member of the Board of the Southeastern Utah Health Department. He will fill the position of Kent Wilson who recently resigned after serving several terms. Martin Wilson has a new position with State Homeland Security and this appointment to the board fits with what he is doing there.
Under citizen concerns, Randall Stilson thanked the commission for their work in obtaining the easement for the Southeastern Utah OHV Club on the poker ride property. He said that ride was held recently and had a good turnout and great weather. This easement saved the club a lot of money in fees they didn’t have to pay SITLA.
The commission approved the election judges for the upcoming elections. In February, Brenda Dugmore, county clerk sent applications out to party chairmen for applications. They were due back by April 1. The following were approved for judges. Donald E. Under personnel items it was approved for Mike McCandless to begin the process for the hiring of a building inspector. Bob Bennett has resigned his position, but will be retained in the interim to take care of inspections until a replacement can be hired. A position in the road department has also become available with the retirement of Grant Nelson. The road department will begin recruitment of an equipment operator Level II. Jerilyn Mathis for the library has recommended an increase for Sherie Packer because her six month orientation has been completed. In the recorders office, Dixie Swasey has recommended Janet Damron be hired for part-time work.
Commissioner Kofford reported on a grant for Four Corners Behavioral Health to be used in prevention programs for the three county area.
The Lila Canyon contract was signed with the Special Service District number one for the monies which will cover the design construction for the Lila Canyon road.
Phases III and IV of the South Moore Cut-off road is 75 percent complete. The granular barrow is being put on the road and the road base will top that. “It’s proceeding well,” said Commissioner Kofford.
In Commissioner Jeff Horrock’s report he stated he attended the women’s conference where Delena Fish was named woman of the year. “We would like to congratulate her on that,” said Horrocks. He said they met with the board of directors from the John Wesley Powell Museum on funding and upkeep of the museum. They discussed Green River history and how it fits into the museum along with the river history. Green River City owns the museum and the county adds Transient Room Taxes to their budget to help operate the museum. The county held their auction which was well attended.
Commissioner Drew Sitterud said Commissioner Kofford was recently appointed an advisor to the SITLA board which will be an advantage to Emery County having him sit on that board. Sitterud told of the grant the county has applied for to aid in the constructing of roads and water for the Green River Industrial Park. The county is opposed to the landscape bill which would add another BLM layer to public lands. Emery and Uintah counties have spoke against it. There is a movement to close duck hunting at Huntington North reservoir. Sitterud told them if they are going to amend the resource management plan for Huntington North it needs to go through an open public process.
Kofford said he attended a road meeting with UDOT to talk about roads in our region. Wellington to Sunnyside is being worked on to make that all four lanes. The Tucker rest area on SR-6 will be taken out and a new rest area will be constructed at Skyline. UDOT has obtained the property there at Skyline. This project will be 2009-10. UDOT plans on doing the Moore to Emery road next year.
Kofford mentioned the work being done on the Lawrence Cemetery. He asked anyone knowing who lies in the unmarked graves to let the IT department know so they can add the information to the map of the cemetery. A notice will also be posted on the kiosk at the cemetery so anyone visiting there for Memorial Day and at other times can be aware that additional information is needed on the people buried in Lawrence.
