Last week, the Emery High Spartan baseball team split their games at North Sanpete on Tuesday and then had their doubleheader at Carbon weathered out on Thursday. Emery won the opener in Mt. Pleasant 5-1 and lost the nightcap 10-8. Emery and Carbon will make up their games Monday afternoon at the Carbon field.
Gatlan Huntington pitched the complete game in the opener to get the win. Gatlan gave up three base hits in the game and kept the Hawk batters off balance throughout the game.
Colby Snow led the offensive effort as he hit two triples in the game and scored both times. Both triples came as he led off the inning. Blake Mortensen and Ryne Jones also had two hits apiece in the game. Emery scored the five runs off eight base hits and four North Sanpete errors.
Jones scored in the first inning after he singled and Mortensen doubled him home. Snow led off the second inning with one of his triples and scored on a ground out by Addison Collard.
Emery scored one run apiece in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. In the fifth, Huntington led off with a triple and scored later in the inning. In the sixth, Snow tripled again and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Derrick Allred. In the seventh, Huntington walked, got to second on a ground out by Jones and scored on a Mortensen single.
In the second game of the day, North Sanpete’s bats woke up and the Hawks pounded out 13 base hits off of four Emery pitchers. Skyler Jensen opened on the mound and pitched the first three innings giving up five runs and seven hits. Mortensen pitched the fourth inning when the Hawks batted through the line-up and scored three times. Brett Mecham pitched the fifth inning giving up two more runs and Jordan Gee closed out the game on the mound.
Emery scored two runs in the second inning, two more runs in the fifth inning and four more runs in the sixth inning. Emery had seven base hits in the game. Gatlan Huntington had a triple in the game and Jordan Gee and Nevin Jensen hit homeruns in the game.
In the second inning, Brett Mecham got hit by a pitch, Taylor Tanner doubled to score Mecham and Nevin singled to score Tanner. In the fifth inning, Skyler Jorgensen walked and scored on Huntington’s triple and Huntington scored on a fielder’s choice by Ryne Jones.
In the sixth inning, after two Emery outs, Nevin Jensen hit a homerun, Jorgensen walked, Huntington walked and Jordan Gee homered.
Emery will face Carbon in the doubleheader as both teams, along with Delta are battling for the second place region spot.
