Desertview Pro Rodeo wows the crowd on their 10th anniversary run
The Desertview ProRodeo galloped into town this past weekend and played to record crowds. The rodeo committee said, “This rodeo was very well attended and we had a lot of good times in all of the events. The hide race was so popular on July 24 that the contestants and fans wanted it repeated on Friday and Saturday nights. It was an exciting event, someone took out the judge, lost their pants and even wiped out the electronic eye. The wild cow milking was as exciting as ever and Cliff McElprang and Will Payne were the overall winners.
“This was the 10th year of the Desertview ProRodeo. There were some people who didn’t think a ProRodeo would work in Emery County and said it couldn’t be done. But, the volunteers here have kept coming back all 10 years and have made this rodeo what it is today. It’s an event Emery County can be proud of and every year the fans just keep coming back and our crowd grows larger each year. The sponsors, the fans and the volunteers just make it all possible. We couldn’t do it without them. The volunteers are the heart and soul of this rodeo.
“Charley Jenkins was the big surprise and he played for the dance on Friday night. About half the rodeo crowd stayed to hear Charley. It was a good time. No one won the Dodge truck, but we appreciate the Price Auto Group for sponsoring the drivers license match event. The Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night on Saturday went very well and we will have a sizeable donation for Active ReEntry.
“We had the very top rodeo contestants in the business here in Castle Dale. It was the very best list of top cowboys we’ve ever had. One of the reasons we had so many top contenders is our joining the Heartland ProRodeo Series. Magnuson Lumber has always been one of our top sponsors and this year they kicked in more money so we could be a part of this Heartland Series. Being part of the Heartland Series opens Castle Dale up to get even more top cowboys. The money goes into a pool which culminates with the Heart of Texas rodeo in the fall. Competing in Castle Dale helps their points toward this event in Texas. Castle Dale is now a qualifying rodeo for that series. This rodeo is a community event and we are proud to keep it coming back year after year. This 10th anniversary edition of the Desertview ProRodeo was one of the best ever and we hope to keep improving the rodeo in the years to come,” said the rodeo committee.
Event winners this year included: bareback riding-first James Sursa, second Tilden Hooper, and third Billy Wall. Sursa scored 88 points on Saturday night for a new arena record. Hooper had just set a new arena record on Thursday night with his ride of 86 points.
Ryan Jarrett and JW Borrego took first in the team roping event with a time of 4.9 seconds. In the bull riding, Taylor White of Lehi scored 86 points on Saturday night to take first place. Braden Cazares was second with 82 points and Tate Stratton was tied for third with Tyler Thorpe with 81 points.
Amber Berry won the barrel racing with a time of 17.70 seconds and Julie Herman was second with a time of 17.95. Sammi Bessert was third with a time of 17.98. In the tie down roping Timber Moore set a new arena record of 8.3 seconds. Ryan Watkins was second with a time of 8.7 and Ryan Jarrett finished third with 9.3 seconds.
In the saddle bronc event Brock Winn from Ferron finished third with a score of 82. Buck Ryan was first with a score of 85 and Wyatt Smith was second with 84 points. In steer wrestling Craig Smith finished with 4.6 seconds and Ryan Shaw and Ryan Scott tied for second with 4.7 seconds.
