On July 20, 15 Outward Bound youth and their leaders arrived in Green River. They pulled weeds and cleaned up Main Street, Wayne Goff’s building, Lemieux’s and the Thrift Store.
AmeriCorps* VISTA’s from the Community Center/Boys and Girls Club of Green River met the group at the O.K. Anderson City Park with lunch and fresh Green River watermelon donated by Dunham Farms. City Councilmember Karen Silliman and Program Manager for the Community Center/Boys and Girls Club, Zina Willard greeted the youth and told them about the community and its residents.
While they were enjoying lunch, a bus pulled up with 19 students from Aich High School in Nagoya, Japan and their chaperones. They were in the United States to learn English. Willard introduced herself and her group to the visitors from Japan. AmeriCorps* VISTA’s shared watermelon with the students and they shared sandwiches with the Outward Bound group. The two youth groups got together, talked and played a game before going their separate ways; Outward Bound moved on to their service project and the students from Japan were off to Canyon Lands and then Disney Land before returning to Japan.
The Green River Community Center said, “Thank you Outward Bound for your day of Service, your hard work and dedication is appreciated and thank you Outward Bound and our new friends from Japan, you both made it a special Sunday in Green River. Best of luck to you all with your future endeavors.”
