After opening the season last week down south, the Lady Spartans came home and defeated the North Sevier Wolves in their home opener of the 2008 volleyball season.
The Spartans lost the first set 19-25 but came back to take three in a row. The scores were 25-23, 28-26 and 25-23. It was a good day for Emery High as the JV team and the sophomore team also won. The JV scores were 21-25, 25-16, 15-8 and 15-5. The sophomore scores were 25-12 and 25-11.
In the first varsity game, Emery fell behind 4-0 and 10-4 before trying to make a game of it. Emery climbed to within 4 at 12-8, 16-12 and 23-19 before falling.
In the second game, Emery started slow again at 0-4 before taking the lead at 10-9 for the first time of the night. Brooke Jensen and Jodi Robertson had kill shots in the mix to spark the Spartans. They battled back and forth until the Wolves led 14-17. Emery tied it at 23-23, took the lead on a Danavin Reed block and then won the set.
In the third set, Emery took an 8-2 lead with Jodi having another kill shot. Emery maintained the lead until at 19-14 but North Sevier then tied it at 20-20 to seemingly take the momentum. It was then tied at every point until Emery took the lead at the set.
Emery jumped out 5-2 in the fourth game but the Wolves tied it at 7-7. North Sevier had the lead at 11-12, Emery had the lead at 17-14 and it was tied at 18-18. It was tied at 20-20, 21-21, and 23-23 until Emery won the last two points for the set and the match.
Also playing varsity for Emery are Frankie Komar, Sierra Bridgewater, ShiAnne Allred, Tiffany Tuttle, Jenni Stinson, Kristiann Grange, Keera Allred And Shawnee Allred.
On the JV team are Taylor Mann, Markette Tanner, Jessica Murray, Tayler Jewkes, Nikki Rogers, Michelle Oliver, Grange, Reed, Tuttle, and Shawnee.
On the younger team are Makiah Sherman, Mandy Davis, Adrie Huntington, Tealan Miller, Whitney Roper, Courtney Tuttle and Murray.
Although the team is still working on their consistency, they have a lot of fight in them that will go a long way in making this a winning program.
