The Huntington Elementary School Trustlands Committee placed the majority of their trustlands money into the summer math and reading intervention program. This was the first summer that a summer school program was held at the school. For six weeks during the summer, students and teachers met to keep their skills sharp and to develop new skills. The special education also held a session.
The focus was on math and reading retention. Summer school was held in each of the six grades. Even students going into the seventh grade had a chance to participate.
Summer school was held three mornings for the weeks in session Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.
With the funds alloted by the school trustlands, Huntington Elementary was able to fund supplies for the summer school and to pay the teachers for sharing their summer with the students. There was one teacher from each grade that participated. Teachers included: Annette Cook, Claron Durrant, Carolee Larsen, Rolene Justice, Tina Allred, Sonia Torres, Laura Blackwell, Jana Kay Wall and Trish Zwahlen.
Huntington Elementary Principal Tom Baltzer was happy to be able to offer this summer school program to students at the school.
It wasn’t just all hard work, though the students were treated to activities and a water party to end the summer school session. These students who attended the summer school had the opportunity to keep their skills sharp. Research has indicated that students lose skills over the summer months and with programs in place to keep students learning throughout the summer, they will have a headstart as the school year resumes. Approximately 80 students participated in the program.
